Just hooked up my SKY+ HD box.

Don't have my viewing card yet.

Whenever I hit pause or record, it tells me to insert a viewing card... is it possible to get around this?

You need a viewing card to use the Sky+ features. There is no way around it.

And that card needs to be activated for the + features...

    Thanks for the info above.

I have a new viewing card on the way from Dublin with the variety pack and HD (I have a permanent address in Dublin but will be *mostly* using the card elsewhere).

They told me on the phone that I just need to call them up to activate it (I don't have an Irish landline, just an Irish mobile). Presumably it'll be paired with the box.

Can't effing wait until Mrs 3DataModem can watch Ireland AM and the Afternoon Show.

Alas yes... I think she just misses Ireland (we're on the Isle of Man).

OK for the record I've completed the process, and now have Irish SKY on the Isle of Man.

I gave a valid Irish address, and used a credit card with an Irish BIN number (which may not make a difference, but I'm not sure).

I was asked for a phone number, I gave an Irish mobile (thanks to Vodafone for posting prepay SIMs for free!).

I was asked for an address, I gave my valid Irish address.

I was asked what equipment was required - I said "nothing - my ex-flatmate left a box + dish here so I just need a viewing card".

And most usefully, the cards are not sent registered post, so An Post's redirect service just bounced it directly to my house on the island. Yay!

Called sky, they activated and paired it instantly. Double-yay!

Only slight fly in the ointment is the lack of BBCHD and ITVHD on the EPG... but they are accessible as per http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055038749

Not sure if I can record these "other channels" yet but I'm currently googling.

All in all, a straightforward process. Just ensure you have an Irish address where there is no existing sky account and I recommend getting your gear (dish / box) from an alternative source (I already had a 2LNB dish and got a SKY+ box from ebay for about STG£60).

So.... wife happy. Xpose (TV3) and Fair City are on series-link. So it feels a bit more like home.

Nope, you cant record the 'Other channels'

(unless you hook it up to a dvd recorder/ video recorder and watch while it records)
