I didn't realize you could use it on instruments. Sounds like an amazing tool to have at your disposal.

It's also amazing that Thomas Dolby would work with people who can't tune their instruments:D

It's in the same way that Brian Eno works with Andrea Corr, it's all about personalities and £€$. (not saying that Andrea can't tune her whistle)

I suppose it would be no real hardship to have Andrea in the studio with a dodgy G string:D

Related to this technology, the Irish Traditional Music Archive on Merrion Square will soon have the IMAAS system developed my the boffins at DIT.

It will have: Sound Source Separation to seperate out individual sound sources from some signal containing a mixture of sounds, e.g. separating out the piano from a piece of Mozart or the vocal in a jazz piece. It works quite well with only a very little "halo" of other sounds around the seperated source. It would certainy be good enough to place it in another track. One of the things it also does by accident is give you the ability to remove the reverb from drums!

Pitch and Time Scale Modification allows tempo and key changes along with fine pitch control.

Noise Reduction of hiss, crackle and pop from audio recordings and sound enhancement and equalisation using high quality graphical filters, some of these recordings originated on wax cylinder.

Analysis tools for beat tracking, musical structure segmentation, melodic transcription to allow "query by humming" i.e. to find a piece of music in the archive by entering the tune.

Unfortunately, because it looks like a deadly little media player, it's all proprietary software,

Only Melodyne Editor, not plugin or bridge etc.. etc.. I use melodyne plugin as I only use it on vox so only deals with one line ;)
