Crazy Chaffinch

Over the winter I've hung out a few feeders of bird food (peanuts/seeds/fatballs) in my back garden (in south Dublin) and had a few birds around over the whole time (robins/blackcaps/bluetits/greattits/wagtails/blackbird/thrush/redwings).

Over the last week I've noticed a rather loud chaffinch has arrived. But he spends a lot of time almost attacking the back patio door. Not flying into it head first, but fluttering against it. Then he just sits on the back step chirping away.

Anybody got ideas as to why he's doing this? Or how to dissuade him without scaring everything away! It just seems a bit odd!

I've had a swan doing the same thing
quite funny at first but when we realised it wasn't temporary I had to put up a fence to keep him away from house...in fact 3 times I put up fence, each one progressively higher and stronger

We have the same problem with a male chaffinch. I woke up this morning to the sound of it fluttering against the window - it carried on for more than an hour. Had a look on some websites and it does appear that it is trying to fight with its reflection. Many people suggested putting UV stickers on the window so it knows there is a window there but just wondering now how that's going to prevent the bird seeing its reflection. Poor thing - I don't want it to be injured. Anyone any ideas? It tends to like our upstairs window on the landing.

It's that time of year again! :P

This is the usual "Mad Bird attacks Car/Window/Doors" thread. :)

Yes, they are being territorial and fighting what they think is an invading male. Best to try and block the reflection to save the poor thing exhausting itself.

Try pulling the cutains at the point in the day when the window reflects most.
