    few questions
very neat work, what type of saws/jigs do you use on-site?

    is the dark timber melamine?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,695 ✭✭✭galwaydude18

I use a Dewalt plunge saw with a guide rail, a Makita skill saw, a table saw, a Dewalt
DW708 chopsaw on legs, cordless drills, routers, holesaws, jigsaw with both up cutting and down cutting blades.

Various other tools including hand tools such as Marpels chisels, handsaws, bevel, etc. No real jigs really.

The timber is white oak MDF stained and then laquered.

I will be putting up some pics of a shop that I manufactured later on.

You getting much of sort of work these days......done a fair bit of shopfitting myself the last few years.....nothing happening at the moment...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,695 ✭✭✭galwaydude18

Ya I'm flat out with it since about september of 2009. I'm fitting shops all over the country. I was in galway one day fitting a shop and had to head to belfast that morning to go fitting another shop. That was just before christmas. I worked 22hours that day.

If things go well I could end up with work flat out until the end of the year. But mind you what I am getting paid would make you sick. I would almost be better off on the dole sometimes by the time I pay for parking, diesel, tolls, food etc.

But it keeps me busy as I can't stand being at home lazin about with nothing to do. I love the work Ido with a passion though.

Thats great....thats the thing about shopfitting ...hours are often long and unsociable..
I'm the same working for basic wage at times but like that ,nice to be doing soething you enjoy....i'll have to stick up some photos of work i've done myself.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,695 ✭✭✭galwaydude18

I reckon its the most unsociable job but its a job I love doing and now one will ever pull me away from a job that I enjoy doing so much. I work a min of twelve hour days and usually end up with 2-3 hours driving each way if I'm not staying in an apartment near the job.

A zombie would come to mind some evening when driving home. Ya I would like to see some pics of your work.

I helped fit out a chain of shoe shops years ago in the Uk,I hear you,it was thoroughly enjoyable despite the night shifts n ****e pay.The time scale was so tight there would be a team of stackers following us with a hoover then shoes straight on the shelves:D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,695 ✭✭✭galwaydude18

Ya I hear ya there. I do all the suspened ceilings, metal frame ceiling, metal frame partitions, tiling as well as part of my work doing the shopfitting. The only thing I dont do when it comes to fitting out a shop is the plumbing, wiring, painting and anything to with carpets.

It's the most satisifing job in the world when I survey a shop unit, do the site survey drawing, a shop layout design, manufacturing drawings, manufacture the job then fit it and then stand back and see the amazing end result..

Very impressive skill set there guys, seems a shame you can't get a proper wage out of it, competition is tight I take it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,695 ✭✭✭galwaydude18

It's shocking tight out there. 100 euro could almost make the difference in between getting a job and losing a job these days. Ya it's a shame we cant make a good wage out of it as it truely is a very nice job to do at the end when you stand back and see what you have achieved under very tight time scales..

Oh meant to add I also do the plasterboarding and the taping and jointing as well..

great pictures gd all looks very sleek and modern and its a great idea to keep photos like that.i should have done the same over the years with complex cut roofs i have done but i never did, when a roof is covered in it hides all the complex joints and stuff and may never see the light of day for maybe 100 years.woodwork in all its forms is a great way to make a living isnt it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,695 ✭✭✭galwaydude18

It sure is! Ya I will be taking more and more photos the more shops I manufacture and fit as time goes on. Ya it's a great way to make a living especially when ya like it so much and the passion for it never fades away!

Hey gd, looks like you do nice work. It's a tough business but glad to hear you're kept busy as it's tough out there. We are in the same game, we primarily design and project manage fit-outs but it's mostly design work now. We are based in Galway but travel the country also. Check out our work at idezign.ie, we contract our fit-out crews as needed so send on your info if you are interested. We are probably a competitor but i've no problem with chating with you to see if there is mutual business we can throw each others way.

Do you have your own workshop?

    Cheers.
    J

Thank you IDezign. Ya I take a lot of pride in my work. I like things to be done right the first time and not to have to do things twice. I travel where ever in the country there is work for me. Travel is no problem. I dont have my own workshop but I have access to one at any time for maunfacturing.

Ya I am sure there is mutual business we can throw each others way. I'l send u a pm with my details.

Very nice work Galwaydude. It must be great to see a result at the end of a day. As a matter of interest what kind of money are we talking for these fittings. What would one of the wall units cost in the gift shop (pic 1 in Gift shop) or the floor unit (pic 3 - gift shop Dublin)....roughly? Great work. .... have someone talking about refitting units in a shop...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,695 ✭✭✭galwaydude18

    Thank you cfeeneyinterior.

One of those wall units will cost in the region of 600 to 1000 euro buy the time all the lights are bought, wired up, the cost of glass shelves, lockable glass sliding doors, etc. are taking into account. It would also depend on the finish you want for the unit. Veneered MDF sprayed with laquer, Laminate finish or just plain white white mdf units.

The floor standing unt would cost about 750 euro do be made in walnut veneered MDF. and the glass shelves for it. There is a lot of labour involved in the making of the floor standing unit and it could also be modified to have lights and sockets in it as well..

What kind of shop are they thinking of refitting? I would be interested in getting in contact with them about it and provide a full design, manufacture, and fitting service for them.

I have been involved in fitting and manufacturing a lot more shops also and will sometime try and take photos of them and put them on my facebook account.

looks to be great work fairplay. do you have your own joinery or do you fit for someone. great design

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,695 ✭✭✭galwaydude18

Thanks ronaldo84. No unfortunatly dont have my own personal workshop but have full access to my friends workshop whenever i need it to make up stuff. I do a lot of fitting for companies that require shops to be fitted out but I provide a full service from design stage to installation stage.
