Referendum on Catholic church

We need a census now on how many actual catholics there are in this country. Children under 18 should not be included in this census as they are too young to vote or join an army, therefore they are too young to be included.

Then we need to insist on a referendum to decide the future of the churches inclusion in government and continuing involvement in education.

    However
With the church now imploding from sexual scandals all across Europe and the deafening silence from the pope, and the inability of anyone in the "worlds largest paedo ring" to acknowledge this without sounding crass the government should immediately remove the church from the contolling the primary schools and instigate criminal investigation into all its diocese's.

How exactly does Census work in Ireland?

I agree about the education thing, but what role does the church have in government?

And do we need a referendum to...uh...expel the church from its role in education?

Every five years, the next one is in April 2011.

Religion is asked as one of the questions. Though a lot of people who aren't practicing Catholics will just tick "Catholic" anyway. A lot of other countries don't ask about religion on census forms, and in others (like the UK) there are public campaigns for "joke" religions, like Jedi. :D

We don't require a referendum on the issue, just a government with the balls to implement the change we desperately need.

I got the false impression somewhere that the Baptism numbers were used - so thats a win anyway

The Catholic Church (conveniently) uses it's own figures of baptisms, which make its membership seem higher than it actually is. This seems to "justify" allowing them to run the bulk of schools, somehow.

This is one of those pseudo-ranty threads that looks like it might give birth to a discussion but can't. With all due respect to the OP, consider a blog.
