I'll be getting the latter in 4-6 weeks time at a cost of roughly €450-500 but I've seen the former on Amazon for €100!
Is the latter really worth 4-5 times the price or am I trying to compare apples and oranges?
    I'll be shooting aircraft mostly.
If you were in my shoes would you bother with the 75-300 as a stopgap or ignore it completely and wait for the 70-300 IS USM.
I'm confused as hell at this stage.:confused::confused:

The 75-300 lens is a older version, and is regarded as at best a reasonable lens, certainly not a great lens. I would not go for it.

The 70-300 is regarded as a good lens, and is worth the extra money. Be aware of two things though. It does not have Full Time Manual Focusing, if that's important (to manually fine tune the AF even while set to AF, rather than MF). The second thing is that the front element rotates when zooming, so that for example a polarising filter would need to be adjusted after zooming. These two points may not be important to you, and if you can live with them then it is a very good lens.

There is another version of the 70-300 but by the sound of it, I think it is probably outside your budget. It is the DO version, and does not suffer from the two issues mentioned above, and is a bit smaller. The DO refers to special glass in it. It is a LOT more expensive however, but it is the one I went for in the end, picking up a second hand copy to offset the price issue somewhat. I have been happy with it, and all reviews are very good, except that everyone says the list price is two expensive for what you get.

You wont regret it .... the 70-300 IS is a STUNNING lens .... IQ approaches L glass in my opinion ... I remember when i got that lens
i took it to the zoo with my 400D and was amazed of the clarity .

I use it a lot with my 5D MKII now ... great for street shots ....

I'm gonna get the 100-400 IS L soon but i think ill hold on to the 70-300 ... great size ... and good backup ...
