Joking aside, there's talk that there's more money to be had on 3d viewings and the film company are disapointed on revenue drops now that Alice 3d is taking over the screens, an extra 40 minutes pretty much there and ready for quick turnaround.
This will effect the release date

But you'll probably need a new Blu-Ray player to play ;)

You'll need a 3D TV anyways to take advantage of the 3D version.

Why would they bother with 3d when f3ck all people have 3d tv's! The technology is literally just starting. AFAIK HD tv's were around for quite a while before blu ray went mainstream

They're planning on releasing the 2D version first and then at the end of this year/start of next year, can't remember which, they'll release the 3D version.

Most high-spec tellies bought in the last year or 18 months will work fine, once it's got a high enough HDMI version and high refresh rate.

Ordinary film made great by the 3d. Can't see myself purchasing this anytime soon tbh.

Yeah, he told me that to put me off buying yet. That makes sense.

Last I heard the PS3 is compatible despite being years old, just needs a firmware upgrade, mainly for the HDMI. Tried Wikipedia there for more information but it seems info is hard to come by.

You are correct, firmware update coming this summer:

Read over this, specifically the section on 3D-ready TV sets, as it should resolve any preconceptions you may have on how the technology is implemented and what equipment is required.

All it mentions is a refresh rate of 120Hz or more and HDMI 1.4. As well as how there aren't many 3D-ready TVs around, but it doesn't say what other than those two conditions are necessary for 3D.

It's in the first line of the 3D-ready TV sets section.
    Wikipedia wrote:
3D-ready TV sets are those that can operate in 3D mode (in addition to regular 2D mode), in conjunction with LCD shutter glasses, where the TV tells the glasses which eye should see the image being exhibited at the moment, creating a stereoscopic image. These TV sets usually support HDMI 1.4 and a minimum (input and output) refresh rate of 120Hz; glasses may be sold separately.

To clarify, a 3DTV needs to have a refresh rate of 120 Hz, or above, a HDMI v1.4 connection and an IR emitter, for the active shutter glasses.

    Ahhhh dude...

The PS3 is compatible in that as a blu-ray player, it will support the updated 3D blu-ray format. That just means it can read 3D blu-ray discs.

You still require a 3DTV, and generally speaking, 3D glasses, to display and view 3D.

In essence its like putting a HDMI port on a non HD tv and saying it can show HD content. Complete bollox

So since HDMI 1.4 should be easily achievable by a firmware update the only thing you're paying that coupla grand premium for is the IR emitter? Nice work if ya can get it. :pac:

That's the thing, while it's no doubt possible a firmware update is all that is required, in addition to the IR emitter, I would imagine that most manufacturers will resort to plugging their new 3D-Ready wares and pushing Avatar in 3D on Blu-ray instead.

Actually i was wondering what do people think the price of this will be when it is released..This will be my first blu ray movie so i dont know what the average price of the movie will be..

So what i am asking you,is that if i wait till release day do you think you could find it for say 10sterling pounds...Like at the moment you can get the over hyped hurt locker movie for like 12 pounds

No it usually takes a few weeks for releases to come down in price. If you really want it on the day of release Play is probably the best option. Id say the price of Avatar will plummet as it was only popular for its 3d aspect. IMO there wont be much interest in the Blu Ray or DVD version! You might see alot of used copys going cheap aswell

Maybe not as the November release may not even include the 3D version either. Another reason to hold of is the fact that the April release will have no extras.

    Why?

Were you not interested in the movie when you ordered it first? If you have a BluRay player and a decent TV you should know the difference between a high quality BR transfer and a poor, just-the DVD-on-a-different-format-disc. I've not seen the film yet but I'd be more likely to order this disc now, rather than something that's compromised on bit-rate to fit in hours of commentary and "special features" that I'll never watch.

This looks like they're taking a similar approach to the "old" Superbit DVDs.

Perhaps the November release will have extra discs for the extras ;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,627 ✭✭✭Fol20

Will the play.com one have deleted scenes?

The reason why id like to have the better edition is because im interested to see how it was made

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,036 ✭✭✭BArra

no it wont, it will have the film and thats it

you have to wait till at least november to get a version with extras
