What's your routine for finding new music?

I just saw this article on different ways to find new music and thought it might be a good thread. How do you go about finding new music, do you have a particular routine? Are you consistent or is it in fits and spurts? Any particular successful methods of building your collection etc?

I seem to find loads for a few days but then i could do almost none for weeks, I wish I could be more consistent. Lately I don't bother trawling beatport charts etc I must prefer listening to mixes of DJ's I like (more local than international superstars etc) and with a tracklist identifying tracks I like. I often focus on finding a bunch of tracks in a similar genre or sound etc rather than just looking across the board.

    Anyone else?

I've developed a great routine lately actually (very lately so the system hasn't been perfected yet).
I start at hardwax or phonica, go through the detroit-ish vinyl section, get a feel for the kind of stuff i'm looking for (taking down artist names, label names, etc.) and then go through all the download sites (wpp, beatport) looking for the mp3's. A lot of the stuff is vinyl only but i'm usually able to find similar stuff by the artist of label that I like just as much.

Sort of fixes my grievances of digital for now (still haven't ruled out the whole move to vinyl though).

Is working an absolute charm as I'm discovering a lot of incredible music.
Probably the most notable of these is Patrice Scott. One of Detroit's new young lads who is just nailing it with every release.

Runs the Sistrum label which has an awesome release by a guy called Leonid who's based in Dublin (but seems to have a deliberate anonymity about him).

So eh yeah, start at hardwax, juno, or phonica in the detroit/deep house sections and it's a winning method (for me anyways).

Vinyl-only releases make me sad though (although i think it's very important that they do things that way).

word of mouth would be a good way of discoverin new artists. people sending links through msn even!

then checking the dl sites like beatport etc. all the charts and that. then using whatever means necessary to get the tracks.

Rarely use beatport but should try more. Podcasts, afterhours fm, compilation cds and hours on youtube usually does the trick for me.

There are a few I used to check out now and again but don't bother any more. I cna't post the link as they usually have the rapidshare download link at the bottom of the posts. Actually http://w-ki.com/ is good - afaik its stopped doing that now so i can post the link here. Still it does not have a 'preview' though. I do remember seeing one blog where you could click play and listen to all their recommendations, and then they would link to where you can buy it etc. more of those would be nice

w-ki is a bit of a disgrace, not gonna go on some illegal downloading rant, ive used this blog in the past aswell, but ive seen eps put up there that havent even been released and seen the artist giving out in the comments section only for him to be told to piss off!

    Blogs blogs blogs for me.

I've just built up a good list of decent blogs from searching tracks on Hype Machine and seeing if I like the blog overall. I regularly delete blogs that go to the dogs and replace with better ones.

Depends, usually get a lot of tunes sent to me over AIM and the likes, have a list of about three or four podcasts i'll check out too... Distributor catalogues are well handy, always check the ST Holdings catalogue every week as well as the Chemical Records forthcoming and Promo sections, then there's blogs but they tend to be pretty useless for what I'd be into, by the time a blog gets it's hands on something I've usually had it a while... Forums are great too, especially for networking, and Soundcloud is wicked as well, find a few artists you like, follow them, see who they follow - make sure you uncheck the box that lets people you don't follow send you tunes though, fecking headwreck - "DJ Massive Bereavement from Butt**** Kansas has shared a track with you and 2587 other people" = fail

Only really play vinyl though, so nice as it is to have access to stuff straight from someone's studio it tends to take at least six months before i'm playing it...

It's not the freshest way of finding music, but I get a lot of tunes from hearing what people are playing out. I'll generally know a good majority of the tunes people are playing, but there'll always be some you don't know. If I hear a great tune I don't know, I'll ask the DJ after what the track was (if I know them), or find it some other way.

For the same principle, I use live mixes and essential mixes a lot. I find using mixes as opposed to blogs/youtube etc helps filter out a lot of the **** releases there are out there.

for finding new drum and bass i go onto the drum and bass arena forum, look at members mixes, new releases etc. i check the member mixes on this forum too.
youtube is good for finding new music i find too, the related vids usually have a few gems.

for electro/house, the blogosphere is where its at for me.

    www.youcancallmepelski.com is good.

i buy all my dnb mainly from itunes.
