Question regarding 3 Modem

I have a DSL broadband link with a poor download speed of about 850Kbs and upload of about 110kbs. Working from home I need to send some large files from time to time so something like a 50Mb file was taking about 50minutes. So I got a 3G modem from 3 yesterday and the same file takes 5minutes to upload, so fairly impressive and I'm very happy with that. I did a speed test to a server in Galway this morning and got impressive results.

Some of the speed checks state that the "quality of service" is not stable enough for VOIP" but I was speaking to someone from 3 who said that it will work with VOIP but there is a higher risk of a dropped call than with DSL. Haven't tried it with voip yet but hope to do so later.

I tried it with an online game and its not great if the contention is high, like when the kids get out of school, I tried it just now and it was mighty, my ping rate was about 60 and is usually anything upwards of 120 on a good day.

The only drawback I can see is that its not "always on" like DSL so you have to reconnect every now and again whenever you shut down the PC its connected to. You pay by the Gb download per month 19.99 with a 15Gb allowance so I guess you can leave it connected all the time. But I'm concerned about basically having a mobile phone transmitting within the house 24- 7, Anyone know whats the norm are they safe to leave on 24 7
Does anyone else have one, How do they use it, whats their experience with VOIP etc

Also having trouble getting it connected to my wifi router if anyone has any experience with that, its a vodafone router and although I can see that its connected when I check connected devices I cannot connect to it through the network.

    Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

Vodafone don't make routers, so you're going to have to be more specific about what that router is, and how you connect the Three modem to it.

3G is not very good for VOIP. Even though it might work some times, it may also stop working, or their may be a lag in the conversation. It's not reliable, so don't be depending on it for anything important. Same for gaming, and your file uploads.

Is upgrading your DSL speed out of the question?

Upgrading the DSL is simply not possible as we are at the end of the line out in the sticks. We are lucky to be getting what we are. I'm paying for 2mb.

The ROUTER is VODFAFONE HOMEGATEWAY branded HG556a made by HUAWEI

If I connect the 3G modem to the router via USB. I can see its connected when I log onto the router. It has some software that allows settings changes, and you can see whats connected via wifi, LAN etc.
If I disconnect the DSL line from the router, and try to connect to the web from my laptop via wifi or my PC via LAN i get the expected message that the DSL is gone would you like to connect via the attached 3G device, Why yes says I, I sure would, and click on the button. Then it comes back with a message that the 3G vodafone device is missing a PIN or some such.
