Posted this in the aviation forum but I think it's more apt here. So if Im reading the following correctly Finland are actually going to pay carriers to boost passenger numbers yet Ireland increases airport charges and taxes people to come to the country??frown.gif

Finland to pay carriers for extra passengers

Finland's Civil Aviation Administration (Finavia) said in a statement Thursday it would introduce incentives to carriers to raise passenger numbers.
Finavia added it would reimburse carriers three euros for each extra passenger this year and two euros next year.
"We want to be involved in supporting the aviation business together with the airlines," said in the statement Kimmo Ruotsalainen, Finavia's marketing director.
"Finavia aims to provide a cost-efficient business environment. Even before the discount, we were one of Europe's cheapest airports."
    Finavia runs 25 airports.

Surely that is against EU rules?

    Which rules?

Finland usually does everything by the book when it comes to what the EU tells it to do so what they're planning must not be against EU rules.

As long as any company can use it they are most likely safe; this was one of the axes with Ryanair and local airport charges earlier.

If it's legal for us to tax passengers coming into the country I can't see why it would be illegal to offer an incentive to airlines to bring in extra tourists.

It's a sensible move imho. Many of my own travel decisions are based on where I can get cheap flights to.

As Nody points out, once the subsidy is available to all carriers, there's nothing I can see the EU having problems with in it.

Subsidising airlines, but as already said, if any airline can avail of this subsidy then all is well and good.

It's probably a more useful use of state promotion funds that a government "visit Finland" campaign - let the airlines figure out their own ways to incentivise travel to Finland. Discover Ireland take note...
