Wing Tsun vs Jiu Jitsu

I used to do Jiu Jitsu years ago and really enjoed it, had to give up because I had two young children and it didn't suit my or my husband's working hours and a babysitter was too expensive and leaving them alone was obvioulsy no option, now that my kids are a bit older I'm looking to start training again.

My main goal is to get fit again (and shed the few extra pounds I gained in the last while) and if I can learn to defend myself in the process, well that's an added bonus and the reason why I want to do martial arts of some sort, my main problem is time, since moving house my old dojo is too far away to train there, there is a Wing Tsun (or Wing Chun if you prefer) course in my neighbouring village, which work work out perfectly for me timewise so that's a big plus.

Is Wing Tsun to be recommended? (I know it's supposed to be a good self defense sport for women, but so is - as I found - Jiu Jitsu) I've just been having a hard time finding a training centre for JJ nearby that fits my schedule

Well first off ask yourself, just how important is self defence for you - ie, realistically are you more likely to be attacked than the average man or woman on the street?.. I suspect not.

Since the Wing Tsun is closest thats the one I'd visit for, then if I wasn't happy with that I'd look around for either your old Jitz club or anything else in the area.

    Firstly thanks for the reply.

It's more about fitness than self defense - having said that, going by where I live & my ethnic background I may well be more likely to be attacked than the average man or woman on the street - but that's not really the main issue - I really want to get fit SD is, as I mentioned, secondary - it's like killing two birds with one stone.

I guess I was just asking because I have no idea what to expect from Wing Tsun, whereas I'm familiar with JJ, I found the techniques very good, I mean if a small woman like me managed to throw a 6'4" muscle packed policeman to the ground using JJ techniques, it can't be a bad MA

Honestly I'd say you should drop into the Wing Tsun club and have a chat with the guys there.

And forgetting JJ for a moment, is there a Judo club in your area?.

That might be an idea too, opposite side of the same JJ coin but still something new to you!.

Sorry to hear that your ethnic background would mean your open to abuse, I grew up as a red head with freckles :P (made me a fighter :pac: ).

Oh yea, and welcome to the forum :D

Maybe just to clarify what I liked about JJ so much.

JJ uses leverage, clinch & throw techniques many of which I found to be very effective and although SD is only my secondary goal, if I choose an art that's not effective, I may as well just take up jogging & aerobics to get fit

Honestly I'd say you should drop into the Wing Tsun club and have a chat with the guys there.

Just sent them an e-mail, i know a lot of them offer a free training unit, so you can get an idea what it's all about, so I'll probably try that out - it can't hurt (well actually it might ;))

Not as far as I know, but I'm looking into all possiblities

Ah, a real "paddy" then ;)

    Thank you :)

Good stuff, I've absolutely no experience of Wing Tsun but there are other's here who have. I've no doubt they'll give their input shortly.

What part of the country are you?.. Might help the guys in suggesting some alternatives to JJ or Wing Tsun for you.

And yup, I'm certainly all Paddy :pac: red hair, freckles and terribly short fuse :o

Correct me if Im wrong but, from what I understand, Wing Chun is one of the few martial arts that has absolutely no focus on fitness at all.

Big Mak im pretty sure the op means Japanese jj, if thats the case wing tsun is very similar and would be worth a try, the odds are that you will like it if you liked JJJ.

To be honest I'm not quite sure, but I guess if it was BJJ it would have been specified? (Sorry but I realy don't know where the difference is, so I wouldn't be qualified to say)

Oh, that would be a shame, but I would imagine all MA forms would have certain amount of focus on fitness, or not?

BJJ is a grappling art with no strikes where the aim is to submit your opponent, JJJ is a striking art with some throws and joint locks in it.

That completely depends on the club. Some clubs put more emphasis on padwork and general fitness than others.

    Hi,

My name is Michael and I teach Wing Tsun in Dublin. I am also a qualified fitness instructor and I worked in the industry for a few years. I have also done a very small amount of (Brazilian) Jiu-Jitsu.

Regarding fitness, I don't think Wing Tsun will make you really fit however depending on your fitness it could make you fitter. I don't know about the Japanese Ju - Jitsu that you did but a lot of places focus on fitness to cover up their lack of knowledge. Others focus on fitness as a way to get people interested but it is not the art that makes them fit but the extra exercises in the class. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for example would make you fitter than Wing Tsun would and the fitness comes from doing BJJ. However you might feel that the increased fitness that comes from Wing Tsun is right for you. You also might feel that the fitness in BJJ is not enough for you in which case you are better focusing on specific fitness training itself. The whole issue is a sliding scale. You just have to find a point on that scale that suits you and the only way to find out is to give Wing Tsun a go.

I love Wing Tsun and have been doing it since 1993 and I also think it is really good for self-defence. I could go on but am trying to keep my response specific to your question.

    Regards,

    Michael

Thanks for all the info, I've come to the conclusion that WT isn't what I'm looking for, will keep on looking for a JJ school nearby, seeing as I'm living in a big city, I'm sure there are a few around.
