I've applied for a couple of Financial Controller positions through some employment agencies.

    No response.
Not even an acknowledgement of receipt of my CV.

Is the accounting jobs market completely dead???
    Or is it just me:confused:

You should definitely follow up with a phone call and request a meeting with the agencies. Financial Controller jobs are like gold dust and the agencies will have plenty of candidates on their books already. You’ll need to chase the agencies now I’m afraid!

The jobs advertised by recruitment agencies are mostly non existent.

How so? why waste their time?

they're not wasting their time. They do it to get candidates to submit cv's then they sift through to get the best ones and approach employer's if they think they may be a job coming up - one of them practically admitted the same to me. They have to be proactive as well in this climate!!

I think there is a bit of that, involved.

I am not sure that the jobs actually exist.
Luckily I am gainfully employed and I applied for the roles out of speculation more than anything else.

You could also have 3 recruitment copmanies advertising the same role and they advertise it more than once.

    Jeeze lads, get over it.

Okay, recruitment agencies are not the best option for a number of reasons, but not all companies advertise directly and prefer to go through agencies. A lot, if not all, the negatives mentioned above are true, but recruitment agencies do not get money unless they place ye in a job... Do the math.

I know a lot of companies that exclusively use agencies.

The company I work for now doesn't, and as a result they could hold aptitude tests and as few as 2 out of 10 people might pass.. so it makes sense to get agencies to forward on better quality applicants.

I have to agree with other posters though - check any agencies site and you'll see vague vacancies with the location listed as "Dublin, Louth, Meath." But it looks better when clients (employers and jobseekers) do a search and find 100 phantom jobs than "0 vacancies found."

Does anyone have any particular recruitment agencies they would recommend in Dublin in terms of professional service and quality accountancy opportunities?

Also what are other methods of job hunting people have found productive? I have been trying www.irishjobs.ie and am wondering what other sites / publications etc may be worth pursuing.

    Thanks

Frank Farrelly of Sigmar recruitment was on one of the radio business segments (not sure was it Radio 1 or Newstalk) saying the Accountancy market has picked up significantly. Haven't seen much signs of that myself though!

I finished my contract in Feb and i sent my CV to Hays, I found them the best as i had registered my CV with numerous agencies but hays always contacted me about new positions. I would follow up with a call about your cv. The thing about web searcing is that all those positions are already a few days old before they even go online as the agency will always contact their list of candidtates first to tell them about the position and see if they are interested.

I had 3 interviews set up for me through Hays, there was a bit of a lag between my first and second interview, so my name was also transferred to the temp department where i was considered for 3 and 6 month contracts. Don't dismiss these positions either as a lot of companies looking for permanent staff use this process to find their ideal candidate. There are still some positions out there after 3 interviews i got a position and i am now finally out of audit and couldn't be happier.

    Happy hunting

Can I ak are you from a big 4 background? Don't mean to be nosey but I trained in a medium sized firm, not big 4 and I don't seem to be even getting an interview never mind a response when I send my CV out. Maybe its because I am in Cork, smaller area or something

No, i'm from a medium sized company and believe it or not it worked better for me with regards an industry job because i had more bookkeeping experience and not just pure audit. I would def call and chase the more determined you are to get a position they will take you more seriously.

There prob is more jobs in Dub, I know i was looking to go back home to kk but there was nothing so i decided to stay put for a while and get the industry experience. When i was looking i did see a fair amount of jobs in cork though, but if you are willing to move it could widen your options.

Pay can be very low in many accountancy jobs.

    The hours can be crazy.

Don't be pushed around by any employer or recruitment agency.

Personally - I find recruitment agencies be be pretty crap.

Hi just a really quick question for this thread please. I am currently working in a very different field to accounting. I have just finished my cap1 exams. And I am hoping to start my Cap 2 exams after the summer. I am doing this through the elevation program. I am hoping to get into a trainee accounting job next summer and hopefully do my FAEs while I am in contract if I can get one. Do companies only take on trainees at the start of the academic year? So really could I rule out any possibility of getting a trainee position until September 2011? (I need to stay in my current job until the start of 2011.)

    Hey Dub,

From people I've talked to it depends on the firm really.

You're best bet is just to contact the firms directly and see what they say.

You may be best trying outside the big 4 as they are almost reducing numbers as fast as they can and just really on their grad recruitment to take on staff.

I have heard of people joining firms during their exams, it's sometimes easier for these firms to take you on as once you've got a few exams done they know you've got the basics down and they won't have to give you as much study leave, i.e. lose out on charging you out :D

Anyway best of luck if you start looking.

I sent out 117 CVs and introduction letters looking for a trainee position and got a lot of replies but no work out there in the mid west

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,339 ✭✭✭tenchi-fan

Villa Limerick, I might be wrong but a hundred cvs is a lot to send without getting an interview.

Is your cv and cover letter good enough?
Are you following the cv's up with phonecalls? if you got a "thanks but there are no vacancies" reply you should phone up a few months later and offer to send in your cv again, and this time get someone's name to write on the envelope.
You should even consider handing in your cv in at reception and asking to meet with one of the partners or managers.

Still waiting on the replies, it is only a week since i handed them out.

Have got about 15 replies, some saying they were very impressed with my cv and experience but that in current climate no jobs available but in the future who knows

You sent 117 CVs out all at once!
Just make sure you keep track of them all and definitely phone them back in future.

fair play though! I've a cousin who's been out of work because there's "no jobs" for over a year now. He applied to only one place... twice.

Cheers thanks, I jumped in the car and spent 3 days hand delivering the CV's over Limerick, Clare and North Tipperary. I imagine I should get at least one interview, I hope.
