Bit of a strange question but has anyone ever worked at a petrol station before? I know times are hard and ill take anything at the moment. Iv been looking for jobs for a while now and i have an interview tomorrow for the petrol station out near Dundrum. Its part time so thats handy cause i want to do study before i go back to college in September. The problem is my mother. She has problems with nerves and panic attacks, and she is real anxious about me working at a petrol station for some reason, mainly night shifts. Id just like to get an idea of the work involved to put her at ease and if they are anyway risky places to work. Cheers

No doubt it can be risky, between forged notes and violent customers. You should never be on your own in the station even if the other person is out back. There should be reg cash pick ups and the cash should be kept off site. There should only be change and 2 floats in the safe onsite.

Your main job when working the pumps is keeping track of customers. Making sure each customer tells you which pump and how much they used.

As you can imagine H+S is a massive part of the job, esp in relation to fire safety and taking in deliveries.

If the station is well run, it won't have been targeted before as it will be well known that there is nothing worth breaking in to it for, so google the station.

Other than that and if you can stay awake, it's a grand job, just make sure you get paid a premium for any night work you do.

Honestly it will only be a stop gap if i do get the job. Ill still be actively looking for work so if something did come up id jump ship. I wouldnt mind working late nights if anything i reckon the night shift would be safer seeing as everything is locked up......maybe

    The petrol station is
    Topaz at Dundrum
sorry if im not allowed announce that, mods edit if needed.

I worked in a petrol station part time when i was younger, four nights a week and at the weekend. I have to say I loved it.
Of course things can be dangerous with robberies and you have to be aware of drive-offs but I would say to take it and try it out.

Went for the interview today, turns out they wanted full timers and im trying to secure part time work. Mistake on their behalf, felt like a tit when she said it to me :o

Just a quick question, if a job application has a closing date would interview take place before this date or do companies usually wait till closing date before they commence interviews?

Ironically, the Topaz on Dundrum Road was robbed last night.
There was a garda helicopter in the air for about half an hour, and I opened my door to a guard with a flashlight searching around.
