Attack on Panama Canal ?

The Panama Canal was vital to the U.S. war effort as it allowed men and materiel to be moved from the Pacific to Europe and vice versa quickly.

I have often thought that a simultaneous attack by Germany on the Atlantic end and Japan on the Pacific end would have had huge consequences for the Allies.

To my knowledge no attack was ever planned , much less attempted - is this the case ? If so , does anyone know why the canal was left untouched ?

I remember seeing a documentary a few weeks ago on the subject of a super-sub that the Japanese developed, and a plan was formulated to attack the canal. The attack never took place.

Sorry, off topic I know. There was a British version of a submarine aircraft carrier HMS M2 built as a prototype. It dived before its hanger doors were closed and sunk off Weymouth. I think you can dive on the site.

Here's the link to the documentary that I mentioned. It seems to be doing the rounds at the moment, but the link mentions a showing on 6th April at 2.30pm
