Bertie Ahern took 16 foreign trips in 2009
    Monday, 15 March 2010 18:17

A new register of TDs' interests shows that former Taoiseach Bertie Ahern took an increased number of paid speaking engagements abroad last year, with fees for each speech of at least €29,000.
Mr Ahern made 16 foreign trips in 2009 compared to nine the year before. Many of these were paid speaking engagements in locations including Honduras, Nigeria, Dubai and New York.

    16 X 29 = €464000 - Nice eh?

    http://www.rte.ie/news/2010/0315/politics.html

Now if we can only still get him to settle his long standing tax issues!

If he was my local TD, I'd be pretty pissed at him. Sounds like he's never there long enough to know what the local issues are!
Too busy making money for himself again. Maybe he needs it all for Cheltenham.

Fair play to him yes - but can he do it all on his own time and not when he is being paid to be a TD and represent his area?
What is he being state paid for? At this rate of coming and going, he's like an absentee landlord!
Here today - gone tomorrow - and back again!
Whats he trying to do? Keep up with the Joneses - or at least the O'Donaghues of the Dail?

This should put paid to those absurd claims that TD work their little cotton socks off night and day.

Patrick Bartholomew Ahern is a crook of the highest order. I still haven't forgiven Tubridy for that shameful "interview" he gave with Ahern on the Late Late.

If we as a society can catch up with the once mighty Roman Catholic church, then I believe that we will get a large number of the rest of the ba stards, this guy especially (as long as Ryan Tubridy is not investigating him).

I found it odd when he resigned as taoiseach that everyone was asking him what he was going to do now. Its a fair enough question but instead of answering it saying he would still be busy as a hard working TD etc etc he didnt even acknowledge that he still had a job at all saying that he would find something to keep him busy.

    I've two issues with this

    1) Who in their right mind would pay to listen to this deluded con-man ?
    2) Between this and swanning around in the car that we're paying for with the driver we're paying for to promote his puke - sorry, "buke" - how many days has he actually been at the work that we're paying him for ?

And yes, my thoughts would be that it's someone "down there".......

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 34,567 ✭✭✭✭Biggins

I honestly don't begrudge the man making money, we should all be so lucky.
He's in and out of the country though earning for himself probably on public paid time - and wage.
Add to this the many government junkets he might go on, the official state huge wages that he's being paid seems a bit over the top if he's only around half the time (for his own constituency!) when he is constantly vanishing off on another personal money making jaunt.
...besides the book tours, the race meetings, etc.

Its just more mad stuff in the life of a TD.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,228 ✭✭✭epgc3fyqirnbsx

    Biggins is spot on

He's not taoiseach anymore but he's still a TD on a govt wage.
His duties are to met with his constituents and represent their interests in the dail.
He can't do this if he isn't actually in the country.
He is getting paid for a job that he isn't doing.

    Damn public sector...

Bertie gets soft landing with jet-set lifestyle and five sources of income

    http://www.independent.ie/national-news/bertie-gets-soft-landing-with-jetset-lifestyle-and-five-sources-of-income-2100116.html
FORMER Taoiseach Bertie Ahern has been accused of enjoying a "jet-set lifestyle" with flights around the globe and five different sources of income in the midst of the worst economic crisis in living memory.
According to his register of interests, he has three private sources of income on top of his €98,424 salary as a TD and his ministerial pension of €98,901.
Mr Ahern is a speaker for the US-based Washington Speakers Bureau and has flown to the USA, Nigeria, Spain and Honduras for five speaking engagements. His minimum speaking fee on the agency's website is $40,001 (€29,268).
Mr Ahern is also a sports columnist for the 'News of the World', and is also earning income from the publication of his autobiography last year.

    http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/frontpage/2010/0316/1224266352914.html
...Mr Ahern discloses that he was afforded travel facilities for 16 trips abroad during 2009, compared to nine the previous year. The locations included New York, Honduras, Amsterdam, Chicago, Dubai and Madrid.
...The fee for Mr Ahern is listed as a minimum of $40,000 (€29,200) for each engagement on the bureau’s website

Thinking about it in a different way, could this be his way of laundering all the money in the brown envelopes ? showing he got it from speeches.
That leech could never speak properly, or make any decision.

On wages like those for a man of his stature, I can't understand how he doesn't commit suicide!

But why or why did neither newspaper check to see if the dates he was away coincided with dates that we were paying him for ?

It isn't suprising that Ahern is in demand as a speaker. He presided over an unprecedented boom albeit it ultimately went pear shaped. George Bush is also in demand as a speaker and people have as many bad things to say about him as they do about Bertie.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 679 ✭✭✭Darsad

He will finally get his come uppence when Mahon produces his report . I heard he has others with deep pockets doing some behind the scenes blocking through the courts to delay the publication. The plan was to drag it out to give him a run for the park but i would imagine even he knows that will never happen now. ( Thankfully )

Its ironic that Ahern was apparantly giving a speech in South America about the Celtic Tiger economy on the day that the government had to issue the state guarantee for our banking industry.

What checking do you need he is paid an annual salary not a daily one so yes he was away on personal business while been paid by tax payer.

Because much as I detest the little rat, the fact is that if he does it on his own time he's entitled to do it.

    If not, however, he's not.
