All I can say is shop around but 1240 does seem a bit steep, what car are you driving? Full or provisional licence.?

As flyingsnail said, shop around, try everyone. The cheapest ins co for me changes almost every year.

It's a provisional licence, a 95 corolla, will be driving that for a while to practice in. Have tried a good few places now and that's the cheapest so far :(

I was shopping around today and the cheapest for me was 123.ie.

How big is the engine, ie 1.6, 1.4 ect? The fact that you are on a provisional means it is going to be high anyway but I have a feeling that the size of the engine might be a large contributory factor.
When I was learning to drive (19yo male) my first insurance was around 1250 but that was in a 1.0L corsa. The cheapest for me (and still today) was Hibernian.

I got a cheap quote from lynskey and ryan brokers in galway with Sertus this year. Last year the cheapest was with the RSA, think they are meant to be good for lady drivers and that was with AA insurance brokers:D

cool i havent a clue like, looks like il be payign round €800 insurance, man driving is expensive between tax insurance nct petrol. If it wasnt for the irish weather i wouldnt have bothered getting a car!

Correct me if Im wrong but fully comp covers more than just the car, no? As in if you crash and cause yourself €20k medical expenses, 3rd party wouldnt cover you whereas fully comp would? Or am I wrong in saying that?

Either way Id always go fully comp where money permits.

You probably wont do a whole lot better than €800 on a provisional license, regardles of age.
