Getting flowers...

A spin off from the advice thread.

    Have you ever gotten flowers?
Even if not for you but for the house/table?

Would you be happy to get flowers or are they a waste of money on decaying plants or it just not a manly thing to have happen?

Id much prefer a pot plant(no not that kind:)), rather than something that dies off. I've gotten them alright and welcome they were.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

I just don't see the point in them. What the hell are they for, except to sweeten the wimmin folk, or propogate the plant species they grow from?

As a male of the species (human, not plant) I see no functional purpose in flowers therefore they don't exist for me.

Edit: Actually, after Wibbs' post I realised I to would prefer a potted plant rather than flowers. I like cacti myself. I have a grudging respect for them, ever since the first one I owned didn't die when I accidentally left it behind the couch for three months.

As Wibbs said, a pot plant would be cooler as it might last a while.

I remember many years ago, I was sitting at home, and there was a knock on the door.
I was not expecting anyone, so was pleasantly supprised to see my girlfriend - and she had brought me flowers. :D

She had actually poped in for a quicky, and thought that the flowers would help put me 'in the mood' - it was a nice touch. :D

Already voted but actually yeah a pot plant would be cool. Especially something you could eat at a later date.

Normal flowers would just be sh%t

Some unusual yet practical potted plant like a venus fly trap or pitcher plant to control insects.

Flowers are something you stick on a window sill and forget about until they're decayed.

I concur with the pot plant sentiments.

I'm not very interested in ornament-y things in general, wouldn't be interested in getting flowers in the slightest. It wouldn't be "weird/wrong", it would just be meh.

I would think it was weird in the sense that it was unusual but I wouldnt think the girl was mad or anything.

Id probably give them to my mother though.

I sent flowers to my husband in work once, only to make a holy show of him, it made me laugh, he was mortified :pac:

He would not be pushed on getting flowers though, he just doesn't see the point of them. He'd prefer if I got him a snickers!

I love getting flowers, especially roses. My ex used to get my roses every so often as a surprise, and it was so nice :) I think flowers are a real sentiment from a lad to a girl, and its a really sweet gift. Thats my opinion anyways! :o

For a very long time flowers were not just an intent of romanitc endeavours.
The language of flowers goes back to greek and roman times, with messages being sent using flowers, and not just roses. So I don't get why it has to be male to female only.

Sunflowers = Pure and lofty thoughts, yeah don't think they'd apply tbh :D

Yup first exchange of flowers in our relationship were when I bought him a bouquet as a joke.

I had to buy a vase as well as he didn't have one.

He loved them, and has since turned into a flower buying "we should make the house more welcoming" type.

I enjoyed it, so did he, and we have fun now talking about the odd enhancement to the house we live in.

I love cut flowers but have to buy them myself. I'll buy a a few bunches every fortnight or so. Makes the house a home. I grow some flowers in the garden just for cutting.

Love going to the continent and walking through the flower markets there. Every house is always bedecked with flowers.

I don't see flowers as a romantic gesture, just something bright and beautiful and fragrant. Much nicer then the smell of old socks.

I seem to remember turning up for my first BGRH Beers with a carnation boutonniere as well as the obligatory tin of carnation cream - and I lived to tell the tale.

i agree with other posters about how i would rather receive some kind of pot plant that would last as opposed to flowers which die within the week.

if someone gave me flowers for absolutely no reason, just because they were pretty and going for 2.99 or something, i'd certainly think it was sweet and thoughtful and nice gesture.

but if someone gave me expensive flowers AS a present for something like a birthday/valentines... i would think it's not creative or thoughtful and that they probably don't know me very well. and definitely a waste of money seeing as bouquets can go from a tenner up to about sixty quid i think! i'd rather be taken for a meal. actually, i'd rather be given a packet of crisps and a can of coke to be quite honest.

Ive never been given flowers and would probably find it a wee bit strange unless it was in a situation like Deleted User and it was done as a bit of a joke.

Agree with the others in regards plants.Bonsai Trees FTW!

*Looks suspiciously at thread* It has to be a trap of some sort >_0. I'd see a pot plant as being more practical, though I'm not into gardening so not real use. My brother is so I'd say he'd appreciate it.

flowers! bad idea. dead to quickly... not going to appreciate them either way
plant.. maybe depends on how much maintainence it needs and light etc. would forget about it in the corner till someone pointed out its starting to die...

so ya flower bad, plant ok if it can survive on its own!

Would generally never want a plant as a present, but there are a few exceptions

    1. A Venus Flytrap

    2. A potted Cactus

    3. A Bonsai tree with a selection of tools and a picture of Mr Miyagi on the gift card.

    A plant, possibly, like below:

A flowering cactus, or easily maintained flowering plant could be quite nice.

My wife has often gotten flowers delivered to me in work. Most of the lads thought it was a bit strange--but its never bothered me in the slightest.

I actually thought it was quite nice in all fairness.

Pot plant I'd like, flowers no.

I hate the idea of flowers as a present. I have given them in the past to my wife but I despise spending money on them.* I believe they are a complete waste of time. There's planty of ways to pretty up a room rather than sink some cut flowers i a vase of water. As a gift, flowers say nothing more than "Hey, look how unoriginal/uninspired I am!".

*That's real romance, when you do something you hate just because you know the other person would like and appreciate the gesture. :D

Best flowers to give are potted Orchids imo. They can continue to bloom for years. I bought one for the other half and it always had flowers on it. It lasted for 2 years with new blooms always replacing the old ones until a guest fell against it

Knowing that I'm a bit of a film nut, if my OH got me a Ghost Orchid I'd be well impressed :D

It wouldn't bother me if someone gave me flowers, but it'd be completely and utterly pointless. I'd immediately be thinking about how I was going to get rid of them when they died.

I like the potted plant idea though. I'd be quite pleased with some sort of cactus.

I have never gotten flowers but it would be cool.
I would never wish to get flowers as a gift. I get them every now and again for my fiancée. I hate flowers that are overly fragrant. I like the look of them in certain settings at certain times but I wouldn't like to have them in the house all the time and it'd be a pointless gift for someone to get me.

I can see the other lads' point about a plant of some sort because it can last a long time and remind you of who gave it to you. It would have to require a low level of maintenance for me though.

on the topic, while i'd appreciate he gesture I wouldn't actually appreciate the flowers. Not cut ones anyway. While I've an interest in the horticultural side of things, its more to do with fruit and veg than out and out gardening. A couple of raspberry canes would go down just great as a pressie.
