Hello all, im new to this site, and just have a few question about the PSNI...

How often do the PSNI recruit???

Im from and living in the south of Ireland and im Catholic, does this matter??

Tattos: I have a visible tatto on my arm of my Daughters name will this cause problems?? and i have a tatto which is not visible it is a cross with green white and gold and the word (saoirse) in the middle of it, would this be an issue??? the writting is very small and would be easy to covered.

    Hope ye can help...
    Thank in advance

    Welcome aboard Mr. Lazy.

This years recruitment is now closed, since 12th Feb. PSNI usually recruit once a year. This is the web page that fills you in on majority of questions which one may have when interested in a career with the PSNI, check it out.

    www.joinpsni.co.uk

As for the tattoos question this is the policy posted on joinpsni web site:

Having a tattoo does not prevent you from joining the PSNI, but certain tattoos and their visibility will not be acceptable. The determination of whether a tattoo is acceptable comes at the vetting stage after all tests, assessments and examinations.
It is not possible to provide definitive advice prior to this, but the guidance set out here is intended to assist people with a tattoo in determining whether their tattoo(s) would be acceptable.
    1. Tattoos, which will lead to rejection

A tattoo or tattoos, which would be visible when you are dressed in uniform (including short sleeve shirt order) and are considered to be:
    1. obscene; or
    2. sectarian; or
    3. offensive; or
    4. of disproportionate size in overall area; or
    5. likely to give rise to the impression that a member might not impartially discharge his/her duty.
    2. Tattoos, which may lead to rejection

A tattoo or tattoos of the same classifications as 1-5 above, but which would not be visible when you are dressed in uniform (including short sleeve shirt order) may lead to rejection. All such tattoos must be described giving size, location and nature. Dependent upon the nature of the tattoo, it may raise questions about the applicant's suitability to be a police officer. Judgment has to be made on the nature of the tattoo, the individual's background and the impression it may convey to others. The variables are immense and cannot be defined. All cases of doubt will be referred to the Vetting Panel for decision. It should be noted that the PSNI is committed to maintaining a neutral working environment and tattoos, which may not be visible to members of the public, may in certain circumstances be visible to other officers. In cases of doubt the applicant may be required to produce photographs of their tattoo or tattoos.

In my opinion they are not offensive and the one on your back is covered on duty so i wouldnt think there would be a problem, but at the end of the day each applicant is assessed individually when it comes to tattoos.

    Hope this helps.
    Regards

    Princess Deity

Yup unfortunately you have, disappointing but it gives you a year to wake up the grey matter and evolve into an Einstein in preparation for the initial selection test ;O) LoL

out of interest, why PSNI and not the Gardai, other then the fact that recruitment has been frozen?

If I had a penny for the amount of times I was (and still am) asked that...

no reason really, if the gardai starts recruiting in the mean time ill apply for that too. I just always wanted a career as a policeman, I dont really care where tho, Was thinking of the UK to but i would have to be living there 3 years before i could apply, Plus the North would be more exciting.

My only worries would be for my Girlfriend and Daughter and there safety, if i did get accepted by the PSNI as im sure they would move up with me once i got settled.

Do bear in mind that although that tatoo is not normally visible it may well be visible to colleagues in places like changing rooms and thus may be contary to the neutral working environment the P.S.N.I. is commited to.
That said , every case is judged on its merits but while your Daughters name tatooed does not contain a political message the other tatoo certainly does.

Yes i was thinking the same, if i got the (saoirse) covered, which would be very easy as the writting is so small, would the green white and gold be ok then??

If I am right that thinking saoirse menas freedom and you got it with a republic of ireland flag colors it seems you are serious about a united Ireland? This would probably be deemed sectarian as would a union jack or colors that make it up. Do you know what im saying??? Not trying to start an argument or anything but if you think they would be offensive or emotive to some people then you maybe want to think of getting them removed before you are accepted. Just my thoughts.

yes i know i agree with you., but would a cross with just green white and gold be offensive??

Again, there is no way of telling what might offend. To a lot of people in N.I, a Union Jack or Tricolour is associated with a certain "side of the fence" as it were, and with that all the unsavoury connections - specifically paramilitary - that that side brings.

While sad, its just the world we live in.

I personally wouldn't find a green, white and gold cross offensive, but I would definately associate it with something sectarian, just as I would associate say a bulldog in red, white and blue (cant think of anything else, probably a bad comparison!) to sectarianism. Unfortunately whilst things are moving on, these petty connections from either 3 colours automatically to bad things are still ingrained in our society.

If it did come down to it and they did deem yours as offensive, removal is always an option...I know I would do it if it meant getting the place or not!

That would probably be best - in my opinion that tatoo is likely to cause you problems otherwise.
