    Hi,

I'm thinking about jailbreaking my 3G (if I can work out how to do it), could someone tell me the benefits of doing it and also if there's any risk involved ? The phone is out of warranty so that's not an issue, I just don't want to destroy it.

Also what happens when I plug in to my mac again for itunes will that not restore it ? Is there an alternative to itunes which is then used (with the same functionality) ?

I'm on a mac btw so windows apps are no good to me.

    Thanks

It's the latest firmware (itunes says it's up to date & will check again in two weeks) & I have an 02 prepay sim in there

When jailbroken iTunes will work as normal .
What you do need to do is not allow iTunes to automatically update your phone if a new firmware is released , make this a optional step in iTunes .
This will ensure your phone wont automatically install a new firmware release thus rendering your jailbreak useless .

If problems are occured then a restore of your phone in iTunes will reverse your phone to its last known settings .

So will my phone be erased when I do it (photos texts etc) ?

Once all your photos , Apps and anything else is synced in iTunes then they will reSync with your phone the next time post jailbreak or restore .
