Bio-Oil: Has anyone used it??

    Hey lads,

I hope this is ok to post here, it's not a prescription drug so I think it's ok by charter rules but feel free to move it mods if needs be.

I just bought a bottle of it in Boots. Been reading REALLY mixed reviews online so just wanted to see if anyone here has used it and what they think?

I usually just get one or two spots in the same areas but my main problem is I always have to wear makeup cause my skin is a bit scarred and blotchy from when I was younger.

Only after one week of using it I feel better and my skin is smoother. It's a good bit oily, despite me only using a few drops so I don't wear it as a moisturiser, but I really hope it works!

Looking forward to hearing your experiences with it.

    Cheers :)

I have never used it myself. But a friend of mine used to get really bad stretch marks on her legs. She started using bio oil for them and swore by the stuff afterwards.

Yeah I read it is great for stretch marks, any type of scar and for uneven skintones/acne scarring..

However, according to alot of reviews online, alot of people said they used it on their faces and they broke out with worse acne than before so now only use it on their bodies.

I like it so far! Just worried in case it's like the calm before the storm. :o

Because I keep mentioning the reviews, here is a linky to the ones I'm talking about -

I bought some because I had a couple of small burn marks on my arm (damn short oven gloves!) and I started using it straight away after the skin healed over. 3 months later? Don't see any noticable difference. :(

I wouldn't use it on my face, but I have naturally oily skin. My boyfriend's mother does exactly that, however, and swears by it! Her skin is destroyed by the sun though so it's probably very dry now.

My friend used it for a scar and it was brilliant, really really helped. Her doctor was well impressed at it. She used it for about 6 months.

But It wasn't on her face so not sure if it would work there? Be awful if it made your skin worse :(

Ya I'd be so upset if it got worse. It's meant for use on the face too (as per instructions with the oil) but I've just read some horror stories! Have to remember though that people only post things online when they want to complain. :) Fingers crossed.

I'll definately update this thread in a few months time and let ye know how it's going, for anyone interested that is.

I've only used it as a general body oil, not on my face and I have no scars or stretch marks so I'm probably not going to be that helpful.

I found it too greasy and slow to absorb. For those reasons I'd be very reluctant to use it on my face for fear I'd breakout.

    But it does smell nice.:)

I have a scar on my arm from surgery and I used Bio-Oil on it for a while 'cause I was crazy paranoid about it. Seemed to fade it a wee bit. I'm not sure if that would have happened anyway, with age or whatever, but still. I say if it's working for you, go with it, regardless of how other people found it!

I tried it a few years ago as a moisturiser on my face, and it made my face bright red, with a burning feeling and felt puffy. Best way to describe it is that it left my face feeling "enflamed". I think I might have applied it too soon after face scrub though, when pores were still open and my skin was abit sensitive.
If I remember correctly there used to be quite comprehensive instructions on how to use it for stretch marks on tummy. Something like massaging in a circular motion for 5 mins, then repeating anti-clockwise for another 5 mins, about twice a day.
Most people I know would just throw it on with just a quick rub,so maybe this might explain why some people have great results and others don't.?
I have heard about great results from some people though on stretch marks etc., not sure about it as a face moistroiser- I might give it another go though,as there are thousands who swear by it.:)

I used it on a scar as well and found it great, much better than baby oil for scars.

+1 on that. I had a scar on my knee and used this stuff a couple of times. It made a small difference at first, then again the sun probably helped to fade it some more. Definitely wouldn't use it on my face, far too oily for that. Do some people use it as a moisturiser?

I suffered from acne/greasy skin/scarring et al and bought bio-oil a few months ago. It worked great for a few days-made my skin really soft. However within a few days I had broken out in red boils!

If you're lucky enough to have the type of skin that bio-oil works for then go for it, but otherwise I've found the damage>benefits!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 330 ✭✭Lorrrrraine

I used to use it on my face, never broke me out but I think thats because my skin was so dry that I could have rubbed cooking oil on it and not get spots. I used it on a really obvious bad scar too and it cleared it up so much. I found it does work best when used the three times a day.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,088 ✭✭✭NoDice

Wow guys thanks for all the feedback!

I'm using it twice a day. - If I've a day off I do it in the morning and evening and don't wear make up. - If I'm working I wash my face when I get home and use it and once again after a shower before bed.

I only use about two drops of it and rub it in until fully absorbed so haven't found it very greasy myself.

I've been using it only four days now and call me crazy but I think it's doing me really good! It's evened out my skin tone so its not as blotchy and my skin is much smoother. It has also faded the smaller scars I had from spots when I was younger like around my chin and temples.

Could be crazy now but I think it's going ok.

I think you just have to keep up your cleansing routine and not use more than two or three drops of it.

I wouldn't use it as a moisturiser but people do. I'm still using my usual moisturiser and using the bio-oil as a treatment kind of. :)

    Keep the stories coming!

I bought it for my face and didn't find it improved the look of my skin at all! Also I find it too greasy think i ended with little spots from it. I'd only use it now if my skin felt very dry and the only reason I'd even use it then is because I still have 2/3 of a bottle left;)
Miracle creams:rolleyes: why do i always expect them to work:rolleyes:

so are you using it to get rid of spots? Cos my mum bought it recently and I constantly have spots in that area in between my breasts so that if I wear low cut tops it looks awful - I wonder if I put some bio oil on them would it help to get rid of them... My mum keeps sayin I should as if it's goin to be some miracle cure...!

    Hiya,

I have a pretty(well not so pretty actually)big scar on my side from a kidney op... it was very big and nasty. I used bio oil and it worked wonders. It reduced the scar so much. Best purchase ever. I had a little scar on my forehead also, and I used it on that and now its gone. i didnt use it on my face during the day. Only at night. No more scar :) However, another BRILLIANT cream for blotchy face is Elizabeth Arden 8 Hour skin protectan. It's fab. Probably a better option for during the day, and continue with Bio Oil at night :)

    Hope this helps

    Kaz :)

I have a scar on my face, got bitten by my dog on my nose, ouch! I used Bio Oil but I found time was a better healer and didn't notice much difference from the oil.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 112 ✭✭nonsmoker

I have been using bio oil for years, I think its fantastic. I use it all over including every night as my facial moisturiser. Skin is so soft and always being told how clear the skin on my face is. (You only need a small amount for your face and it does not feel greasy)
Both my sisters use it as well, one of them has not 1 stretch mark after having 3 kids.

A great product! I used to use it to aid exfoliation i would add some to a little sugar, salt and gently exfoliate my face then wash it off. It used to clear up my skin and leave it super soft. I could never apply it and leave it on my face as i have combination skin so it didn't help to leave it on my oily areas. I know people who've used it in scars and have said it even has helped lessen the look of old stretch marks. It's been awhile since i've used it, think i'll be adding it to my shopping list.

I wouldn't use it to get rid of spots tbh. It is very greasy so I think it would add to the problem. I am using it to get rid of the scars and red marks I have from spots/scarring. I usually get one or two around the time of my period so I'm planning on avoiding them when that time comes but so far I haven't had a break out, my skin looks a bit clearer already and its much softer.

I had very red, scarred skin around my temples and chin and my cheeks were very red but the bio-oil has defo taken care of my temples, my cheeks have toned down a little and its gotten rid of maybe 20% of the marks on my chin. Starting to feel a bit more comfortable with only a slight bit of foundation now which I find a huge improvement!

Thanks Kaz! Will look into buying the 8 hour skin protection. Thanks for that. :)

Great tip!! :D Thanks a million! I'd say you've helped alot of people with that one, it's a really good and cost effective idea!! Hee hee! I sound like a sales agent!

I used it and found it no help at all.I think vitamin E oil is much more effective for clearing scars and alot cheaper too.You can buy vitamin capsules, burst them and apply the oil to the scar. I have to say I agree with Pythias post though and believe time is the best remedy for scars.

I used bio oil for general body moisturizing as well and was not impressed.I find Palmers Cocoa Butter to be miles more effective. It leaves your skin much softer and it really evens out tone and helps with any scars. It's also great for fading any stretch marks. It genuinely works.

I work with a guy whos wife is a plastic surgeon in the burns unit and he said she highly recommends it. I used it on a scar on my arm following an incident with a GHD and you wouldn't even know I'd been burned now. I hear for stretch marks its better to use it in water (like in the bath)!!

Yeah, it worked on bad scar on my chin left by a wayward beautician. I had the scar for two years and now I can't even see it.

I found bio oil to be excellent at helping my dry skin/dermatitis. I'm prone to dermatitis on my hand and tried EVERYTHING I could find about a year ago when it was bad, but this was the only thing that had any effect. I was wary because it's scented and thought it might irritate my skin even more cos its so darn sensitive but the dryness cleared up immediately :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,088 ✭✭✭NoDice

Right just thought I'd give ye a quick update on this for whoevers interested.

If ye read my first posts I said the stuff was great. Now I'm not so sure I bet it was wishful thinking. Started noticing that my skin was just redder and puffier after using it so it wasn't getting rid of my scars it was just making my whole face redder so i didn't notice them.

Had a breakout too around my jawline which is strange for me as usually it happens around my chin really. I was rubbing it in properly and all of that.

So didn't work for me. I stopped using it on my face and am just sticking to regular cleansing.

I will start using it however on a scar I got on my hand from cooking as that seems to be the best use for it going by all of yer feedback.

    :)

Poor you, no one wants that
I do recommend not applying bio oil, sweet almond oil etc to often to face as it can overstimulate the skin and increase its oiliness. This is true of facials in general. Once or twice a week only depending on your skin type.

I use it every night on my face and love it. I'm very lucky with my skin anyway but at 39 this stuff really seems to be keeping the wrinkles at bay (touch wood). It may be better for 'older' skin.

Re: the spots on your chest. Tea Tree Oil. It's amazing stuff. Put a dab of it on at night and next morning you'll see a huge improvement. Be careful if you buy the pure oil to dilute it a bit as it's strong stuff.

I got one bad scar and a few teeny ones. Not bothered by the teeny ones but used it for a bit on the larger one and didn't notice a difference. It does say though on the bottle use often on the area for upto three months, I used it randomly on and off for about 3 weeks. :o

I would wait for the scratches to heal more first, bio oil can reduce the look of scars but if they are still red I'd wait awhile 'til they fade more.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 77 ✭✭ioc

cool thanks oide10..just worried if they were taking long to heal..what would be a normal time to wait?..i got somthing coming in sep..you think id have chance of them being normal skin coular by then?...i just got bio oil which inlcudes vitamin e maybe it can help better than vitamian e cream

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 64 ✭✭oide10

As long as they are not open or weeping. Make sure they are dry. It absorbs in pretty quickly but make sure you apply just to the scars, you don't want to have break outs as well. If you're a girl you will probably be moisturising your face daily and that will also help.
It really depends how deep the scratches are, I have a burn on my hand that I have been applying bio oil to regularly (but not daily), the raw look has gone from it but it's still noticeable unfortunately. I suppose just use it every day, in the morning and evening religiously and you should see improvement after a month.

..yes there dry..its great that its absorbs quickly..im a guy too:)...well they are not deep.. there just alittle red lines..fading but somtimes up close and it light can be seen..so thats why i would like that they fade fully if there half way there.. thats why i thought maybe i need a very good cream/oil to get rid completely...cool i am goin to use bio oil morning and night time..and il give a month:):)...cheers thanks alot!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 156 ✭✭SquirrelFace

I use it and its good.... I worked as a waitress and got scalded on my arm once, still left with a raised burn mark that people ask me about, but I have to say it did improve it and fade it, it used to be a lot larger and shaped like Africa but now looks like a little better...

I used it on a small scar on my face from a crash, it worked wonders. Its just about invisible now and it was very pink. Also smoothed it out a bit. Wouldn't use it as a daily moisturiser, but I do put it on my face overnight sometimes :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13,252 ✭✭✭✭Madame Razz

Didn't do much for me in terms of clearing up scarring. Found regular Vitamin E and Rosehip oil much better. It is pretty good for dry skin tho, and I quite like the smell of it:)
