I have been applying for jobs in the north and in the UK. Some companies want to know how much I expect to earn. I'm not sure what to say as rates of pay are different in the North and possibly different again in the UK.

Are there any guidelines to help me figure out how much I should state?

I would say reduce your Irish pay by about a fifth and that should be your wage demand in sterling. If on €30,000 then a wage of £24,000 would be about right. Been looking in UK also and that I reckon would be a fair enough conversion

Do you notice a difference between wages in the North and the UK?

Having lived and worked in all of the jurisdictions you're asking about, NI salaries are usually lower than ones in England, and much lower than Irish ones. The minimum wage is £5.80 an hour so if you're working upwards from that it will be considerably less than an Irish salary in most cases.

Between NI and England the difference isn't huge, but it's there nonetheless. I couldn't quantify it as it varies by sector, but searching jobs in Belfast and similar ones in Birmingham or similar would illustrate it. That would also help when potential employers ask what your expectations are.
