    System Prefs > Network > Airport > Advanced > TCP/IP > Configure IPv4 - using DHCP

Did you try this? Is it not keeping the setting?

No prof its not keeping the settings for, even when i click the lock it always seems to be opened when i go back, i checked the settings you just put up above and they are exactly the same.

if you have a 169 address then you have no network connection. Is your connection wireless or ethernet? Run an ethernet cable from the mac to your router, restart the mac and restart the router. give it a min or two and then go into your network preferences. A s mentioned above, make sure you are set to DHCP (it should be set to that automatically anyway). The IP address *shouldnt* read 169.etc etc

To be fair, this isn't a problem relating to the Mac forums or Apple Computers.

It's a problem with your DHCP server. Probably your router!

Try setting up a fresh account on your Mac and see if the problem persists in this new account. If it does then its likely a DHCP issue... if not... ye might have a corrupt network preference file or something. Worth a try anyway..!

AFAIK the network settings are independent of user.

Creation of another user shouldn't affect it.

Forget the DHCP server for the moment. open a terminal and type in the following:
    ifconfig -a

    This will give you a list of network devices/interfaces. Let's assume it's en0. Don't include <> either.
    sudo ifconfig en0 192.168.1.25/24
    sudo route add default <ip_address_of_your_router_here>
    sudo echo "nameserver <DNS_ip_address_here>" >> /etc/resolv.conf
sudo ifconfig en0 down; sudo ifconfig en0 up

Try ping www.google.ie now. If that does not work, and you can ping the default interface on the router, it's the isp's problem, not you.
Unless of course, the PPPOE/other settings on your router/modem are not set up correctly.
