    Hi,
The inaugaural meeting of the above Society takes place in Slievenamon Golf Club Lisronagh on Tuesday 23rd March at 8pm.

Are you interested in Military History?

We are a group of like minded people who intend to develop our interest in this subject and we would like you to join us. There are no limits put on which areas of Military History we will explore, some people have a preference for the 1st or 2nd World War, some for our own War of Independence and Civil War, and some have a broader interest in wars in general.

We are not about glorifying war, if anything we would be more about the impact of war on those who fought and died and those who survived, and where possible keeping alive their memory and respecting them by organising tours to the battlefields where they fought, and wreath laying ceremonies at their place of rest.

While it is hard to put an exact figure on the number of Irish casualties in for instance the First World War, it is generally accepted that between 35000 and 50000 Irishmen gave their lives, with a similar number injured in varying degrees of severity, while it is estimated that approximately 15000 Irishmen died during the Second World War.
In South Tipperary alone, on the Memorial Monument in Cahir, are listed the names of 87 men from the locality who died in the First World War. While 32 of these men were enrolled in the Royal Irish Regiment, due mainly to the 5th and 6th Battalions of this Regiment being formed in Clonmel in August and September 1914, they also came from such diverse groups as the Army Cyclists Corps and the Punjabis.

Many of their names are instantly recognisable to us today as Tipperary names, such as Hally, Lonergan, Looby, Wall, Maunsell and many more, and many of us have our own personal stories to tell of relatives who fought in various wars and the impact on them if they survived, and the impact on their families, sometimes for generations, if they did not.

Currently we are in the process of forming the South Tipperary Military History Society, and a Meeting will be held in Slievenamon Golf Club Lisronagh on Tuesday 23rd March at 8pm for this purpose.

We hope to have some Guest Speakers from the Ormond Historical Society in Kilkenny who will hopefully guide us in how to develop our Society.
So if you have an interest in this subject, feel free to join us.
Should you require any further information, please contact Kay Neagle on 086-0655428 or email kayneagle@eircom.net

An excellent response for our 1st Meeting, hopefully we can maintain the momentum and drive forward.Amazing the amount of knowledge and family history there was in 1 room, and a wide range of areas of interest, from Ancient Military History through Medieval, Peninsular Wars, 1st and 2nd World Wars and our own War of Independence,to the Civil War.
Some of the family history told on that night leads me to conclude that there is a lot more yet to be told when Society Members get to know each other better, already I feel most of us entered the Meeting as strangers, and emerged, if not as friends yet, well certainly a long way down that road, and I know that we have some very interesting times ahead and I for one look forward to them immensely.
Tom Burnell, the Author of "Tipperary War Dead" and other books and came from Thurles to attend, will be our 1st Speaker at the next Meeting.
That Meeting is scheduled for Tuesday 20th April at 8pm in Slievenamon Golf Club.
It would be appreciated if we could spread the word to the rest of the Members that our email address is southtippmilitaryhistory@hotmail.com and if Members could send a quick Hello email so we can have their addresses on file for future reference.

    Hello Robert.
The lads in the clips re-enacting ww2 are mostly from Waterford, Cork and Wexford. They are unemployed, Solicitors, Armourers, Doctors, Mechanics, Farmers, Layabouts and even a priest (thats the guy the Kilkenny speaker was talking about at the meeting, his name is Reverend Mark Hayden from Gorey who has written books on German ribbon bars and German Chaplains. He is a nice fella and very approachable). All the lads involved would be experts on their own period of military history and love to discuss different aspect of it. If you wish you can purchase uniforms and webbing at the show. Also available will be ww1 reproduction uniforms and other items of kit, medals, insignia, etc. There will be a battle on the beach on the Sunday afternoon. The pyrotechnics for the battle will be provided by an English company and they will be filming and using the footage taken. The show will be attended by re-enactors from the UK and the Continent and even some from the States. Another show like this will take place in August called 'Salute' up beside Dublin Airport, this Dublin one is mostly military vehicles, re-enactors, tanks and battles in the arena, from the Napoleonic period through ww1 right up to the siege of the British Embassy. These are great family days out and an easy way of learning history.
    Regards.
    Tom.

    Hi Tom,
Good stuff, we really have to organise trips to these, especially as they are so close.
Reverend Mark might even be a Speaker in the future if we ask him nicely I'm sure.
    Regards, Robert

    Hi All,
I visited Duncannon Fort with Brendan Kenny on Saturday 5th June and what a great time we had.The amount and range of Equipment, vehicles, uniforms and the depth of knowledge exhibited by those involved was truly awesome.
This was our 1st time attending and I have to say it was an absolutely brilliant day as evidenced by the large crowd in attendance.
A special word of thanks to Tom Burnell for his assistance to us on the day.
    Well done one and all
