Getting sony bdp s-360 blu ray player to read ext hard drive?

I'm having trouble getting the sony bdp s-360 player to play my movie files off my external hard drive (wd hard drive 1tb)!! It recognises that it is connected but there is no files showing on the screen!! the only option i have is "bd data --> shared cache data --> erase bd data" nothing happens after you erase the data!!…

i have a similar player and found the usb port only worked for flash drives and the usb is mainly used for update to bd live.
