US / Canada + car rental + border crossing

So with a couple of mates we have half a plan to go away for 2 weeks or so and drive a little and fly a little in US / Canada. The thinking would be to fly into somewhere like Toronto and drive down to Detroit.

This involves cross-border car hire and road border crossing. I've been to the US twice but never entered by road - will this be much different? Do they do it out the window of your car like a toll booth?

Does it increase costs much with car rental taking it cross border etc?

Any thoughts? I'm not really looking for advice on locations as much as I'm looking for advice on the practicalities of it all.

    Thanks

You shouldn't have any problem. Like with air-travel you'll be expected to have a return ticket to prove you intend to leave the States.

Also make sure that you have the rental contract with you which states that you have permission to take the car into another country.

You will need to check with the various car hire companies as to what their policies are regarding cross border and crop-back. I imagine it varies.

You are likely to need to have your visas in order before leaving Ireland or alternatively, you need to check the fine print of the visa-waiver programme.

Why are you going to Detroit? :)

I went to www.hertz.com and picking up in Toronto and dropping off in Chicago was not an issue although it did seem expensive enough. I need to look into it more though from the cost side of things.

As for visa's I really do need to look that up but would have assumed (obviously would need to look into it) that entering by road from Canada would be pretty much the same as entering by air from Ireland.

I need to look up Canadian visa's too and if / what is required.

Detroit .. the murderous smog filled city .. why not? No idea really, was just an example / one of the options. Looking at a couple of drive / fly options starting in Canada and finishing up in Vegas with a city or two in between!
