Tax on the way - can I drive?

Just bought a car last Monday, cert was posted to Clare Tuesday morning and I am waiting on it to tax the car. My test is in a week and I would like to get some (accompanied!) practice. Insurance & NCT all ok - can I take it on the road? Is there a grace period after purchase?

(Tried google/department websites and cant find specific details)

I am not sure what the law states But if you have proof you have sent away for the tax just in case you get stopped you'll be fine. As long as you can prove you have paid.

The law states you may not use a vehicle on the road if it does not display a tax disc. So, while a Garda may let it go, you should not be on the road.

I might be misunderstanding, but you've sent away the cert and are waiting on this back before taxing your car yes? In this case, it's not taxed, deffo shouldn't be driving.

However, even if you haven't received the cert back, the car may already be transferred to your name in which case you could tax it. But that would mean calling into your local MTO, which might not be feasible.

Yeah its an offence to drive without displaying valid tax disc. Its a separate offence to drive without having paid the tax. Bringing the proof of payment will likely stop a given garda from triggering a summons in respect of the latter; technically he/she could summons you for not displaying tax disc but if they let you slide accepting you have paid that is truly unlikely to happen. If you have proof of payment keep that in the car and I wouldn't hold back from practicing with your accompanying driver.

Main point is you won't be allowed use the car for the test without a valid disc displayed irrespective of whether you've paid or not.

edit : sorry I'm presuming you have actually paid the tax. Reading dearg lady's post I see what she means, that you may not. If its not taxed its liable to be confiscated if you put it on the road.

That is correct, I am waiting for the cert. Thanks, I wont chance it.

I'm open to correction but I don't think you have to be the registered owner of a vehicle to tax it. It would probably have been possible to tax it and then send the paperwork to Shannon.

no, you have to be registered owner, but some MTOs might kindly change the details over if you brought the change of ownership in, that way you could tax it at same time.

You dont need tax on your car for a Driving test. Or let me put it this way they can not stop you doing a driving test with no tax. Insurance yes and nct yes but for some reason no tax.

 how is this possible??! Is it one of those bizarre loopholes

Used to test and we were told we can not stop a test for no tax. The nct is a health and safety issue and the insurance explains itself.

But another loophole is that you cannot fail your test for not wearing your seat belt. It is marked under checks on the test but you cant get a red mark for it.

    That is strange.

When I was sitting my ADI Stage 2 the "Final Checks for your Driving Test" sent with the appointment letter states:
The following must be displayed on your vehicle -

    1) Current vaild motor tax disc and insurance disc
    2) NCT disc................

Current valid tax disc is listed as a requirement under RSA guidelines:

Yep i know it is listed........But when testing we were told we cannot not perform a test if they dont have a current disc.

I just got it today (my cert of ownership). With one wrong letter in my name - they clearly hit the adjacent key when typing. It is such an obvious mistake I cant understand how they even sent it out...

Anyway, it's all taxed now, so thanks everyone!

will that be alright? i mean it's a registration. it should be precise to the smallest detail

Sorry, long version: Went out to the tax office with the cert, explained myself, calls were made, details changed and I got my tax disc on the spot. Amended ownership cert on the way in the meantime!

Unless the rules have changed in the past few years that wasn't always the way. My wife had a test abandoned in Finglas a good few years back as her tax disc wasn't in order. While doing the external visual inspection, the examiner informed her that he couldn't proceed with the test and walked away.
