Just plugged my Vodafone iPhone (obtained from IOS) into iTunes.

Was prompted to download a carrier update.

When I did, I found that official tethering was enabled! On VODAFONE!

no surprise there, voda offer tethering, but you will pay silly money for it unless you have subscribed to their tethering add on..very very silly money, so be very careful...

Is this ok to download? I'm using an unlocked (hacked with Blackrain) iPhone 3GS running 3.1.2 and I don't want to lose my unlock?

    yes you'll be grand,

I didn't know they were gonna enable it.

I stopped monitoring Vodafone forums due to a *massive* influx of whiners demanding that IOS call them immediately.

Such an overblown sense of entitlement!

Anywho, I've been using iProxy from GitHub to tether. Works ok. Must investigate these tethering plans. See if they are any good!

Off topic I know but do Vodafone iPhones have Visual Voicemail? O2 never implemented it.

You won't see it as the Carrier Update disables it.

That won't do anything. The Carrier Update disables editing the APN settings.

Confirmed, turning it off and on does nothing.
No real need to see/edit these though I suppose?

But if this carrier update means you cant edit the APN settings, are people not going to be in the situation that happened previously? Weren't there reports of peoples' iPhones making some kind of network data connections, and using credit etc when they didn't think they were really doing anything on the phones?

if you download the carrier update for a vodafone iphone what will the dafault connection be? live or isp/hs? reason i ask is i have the isp promo add on and thinking it may now be using live via carrier update?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,534 ✭✭✭✭guil

Thanks Guil. I actually did that last night and I did get the file back but even with settings for MMS were put in it didn't work. There appears to be problems alright with update and also apparently it is important that you have a 128 Sim Card with Iphone. Vodafone are in undated with calls with this problem. I am at the moment holding for support for the last 20 mins and still holding! Hopefully when I get through they will solve the problem. I will post answer if it can be done without their help once I find out.

    Thanks again for your reply.

According to Support on Vodafone DO NOT INSTALL THIS UPDATE which is coming up. Now they are saying I will have restore phone again. Basically they don't seem know what its about. This is painful with Vodafone I have to restore the phone again. DO NOT THIS UPDATE.
