Engine Rattling / Squeaking

I've noticed over the past few weeks that the engine in the '95 Escort has become increasingly louder. There is a what can be described as a squeaking noise coming from somewhere in the engine (the noise is similar to that of cycling a bike with a rusted chain). I'm thinking it maybe the timing chain, but I'm not sure. I adjusted the tappets recently, but the noise was these even before I adjusted them.

    Any suggestions?

(It's the pushrod 1.3L HCS engine by the way).

it could be the idler on the chain, had the same problem with a subaru

Is there a idler pulley on the fan belt?

Take the belt off the car and run it for a minute without it, see if the squeak goes away. Could be a bearing in the alternator either

The alt belt also runs the water pump.

It could be that starting to go either. Taking the belt off will narrow things doing for you. Spin them by hand and check the bearings for roughness
