If you use iTunes and get an Apple Airport Express (AE) wifi hub, you can use the combo to stream music to the AE using Apple Lossless Audio Compression ALAC. Apple refers to the system as Airtunes.

The AE has a 3.5mm stereo socket allowing you to connect it's audio output to a wide range of devices.

You could hook up a Klipsch iGroove for little cost but good sound quality, or you could get a B&W Zeplin for more money and a bit better sound quality or you could get an amp and high quaity speakers.

Since the system streams losslessly, the music quality would be determined by the source files and the reproduction system attached to the AE.

If you have a few bob (it ain't that cheap) check out the SONOS system.

    www.sonos.com

Wireless playback and expandable. There's also a controller app for the iPhone/iTouch.

Same goes for the Squeezebox of which I'm a great fan. High quality sound, works with wired and wireless networks, and supports many different audio formats/codecs. There's a number of different products available and I find that Peats of Parnell St. have good prices for the range. You might want to check through the forums to see if your NAS is capable of running the server software (I use an old PIII computer).

Advantage of the SONOS over Squeezebox is that you don't need to install any software on the NAS (or anywhere in fact). It accesses your NAS drive over the network and playes back whatever you want. Every audio CODEC is supported too (other than DRM).

I have a NAS, in fact I have 3 - a QNAP, a Buffalo and a Popcorn Hour. There is a list of unsupported NAS on the SONOS website. As long as the NAS supports SMB/SAMBA it will work with SONOS.

NAS = Western Digital My Book 1TB World Edition...~€130 on Amazon. Most seem to like the Buffolo...All depends on whats your budget. Good info can be found on Sonos forums http://forums.sonos.com/index.php
    e.g.

If you are going to bother with a NAS then get one that supports at least RAID 1 (mirroring), that way you won't lose your tunes when you have that inevitable disk crash.

    Hi mylesm,

Items worth checking if you want best quality sound (budget depending )
Sonneteer Morpheus system or Bard wireless transmission amps / receivers.

or if you want to run a multiroom / location system using a laptop take a look at Audio Pro wireless active speakers LV2 MODEL they are supplied with a transmitter ( usb or 3.5mm jack ) and you can play 3 different playlists to three locations at the same time in full dsp transmission ( no d to a conversion !) and its plug and play . €799.00 per pr

    good hunting !
