I've just got a Dell 10v notebook. XP installed . all worksd as expected. Wireless and wired connectiona all ok :)

I'm thinking of installing ubuntu (9.10).

As a test I created a usb boot from my other Ubuntu PC.

It boots OK :( but No way can i get the wireless or wired to work!

enabled Broadcom hardware driver B43 - no go !

Looking at various sites it seems that the whole world has similar problems....

any solution that requires a net connection will not work if i cannot connect :(

Has anybody sussed out this ?

Not sure about USB booting but I did install ubuntu netbook remix dual booting with xp on the 10v and everything worked (including wireless) with no need for any driver installation etc. Wasn't too keen on it so now have it dual booting XP and Snow Leopard. I'm sure you've already found this forum but if you haven't it's got more info than you could possibly want!

    Thanks for that ,

I've been on that site (and many more :)

Being impatient, i rigged up a DVD drive taken from my wifes PC . I was able to link it to the USB via an external adaptor I got originally for IDE/ SATA drive. I could not get it to boot, so installed from /xp and now have dual boot with Ubuntu 8.10.
The Dellmini site seemed to confirm the problem with 9.10.

The 'remix' you mention---What version is that ? and where is it available ?

since I'm up and running with 8.10, i may leave it for the present, but eventually i do want to go the Apple way with Snow Leopard

As an aside, I changed the BIOS to boot from USB and now it is LOCKED !! :(
Many of the BIOS options are locked .... will check it out later, but so far it does seem a common problem on 10V.

    Great little unit otherwise

    Thanks

I had the same problem myself when using the mini 10v, thankfully there is an easy fix....

    Yeah :0
I came across that fix but my problem was that I could nor even get a *wired* connection, so I could not use that fix.

I did try to download to another PC and transfer but to no avail.
If I now upgrade to 9.10, I suspect I would have the same issue.

I may try in a week or two. Right now i need to keep it working for the next few days.

    Thank

    Just to update....

the 10V went back to Dell to get the BIOS unlocked. Their online customer support could not unlock by any method - even reflashing the bios...

It cam back in a few days fixed - great service :)

I reinstalled ubuntu 9.10 as dual boot with XP - got a wired connection going - updated online & rebooted. Hardware drivers STA were then available. I activated them and rebooted. No problem - then I had wireless :) .

For other reasons - I actually reinstalled ubuntu a no. of times and was able to enabled wireless every time as above.

I installed a 2gig memory upgrade. tricky -the whole thing has to be stripped down to motherboard.

In the last few days I've updated to triple boot on the mini.
Now I've got XP, Ubuntu and Mac OS_X up and running. :)
