    I have hit listeners block!

I really do not know where to look next for more new music

so I would really appreciate some reccommendations,

I am liking post-rock stuff lately for the first time - like explosions in the sky, sigur ros, the album leaf etc.

I have also gotten into Kanye West which surprised me a helluva lot and I really don't like any other hip hop I have heard so far but would be open to anything special

I've been loving Bloc Party, Yeasayer and The National lately

Wilco are a huge ommission from your list, i'd say go with yankee hotel foxtrot and see what happens.

Also if you're feeling brave, find Too Rye Ay by Dexys Midnight Runners and listen to it straight through, you might br surprised.

No skipping on either of these albums.

Thanks I have gone about getting both of these, a bit dubious about the second I must say but we will see what happens :p

The lack of Pixies stand out from that list. They've had considerable influence over the likes of Arcade Fire, Modest Mouse, Radiohead, Nirvana, Foos, and probably a few others.

Get some Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Husker Du and The Replacements into you as well, they've a wealth of brilliant material.

    Try these:

    Timber Timbre
    Samamidon
    The Antlers
    Okkervil River
    Okay
    Shearwater
    The Tallest Man on Earth
    Beach House
    Low
    Yo La Tengo

I love the Pixies song at the end of fight club so I might try again to get into them, the rest I havent heard of aside from Nic Cave, will give them a go

Its so wierd to see Animal Collective sandwiched between Eminem and the Saw Doctors...

Try some Why? for hip-hop/indie crossover, some Godspeed You! Black Emporer (and sister act Thee Silver Mt Zion Orchestra) for all your post rock needs. Ride, Galaxie 500, Sunset Rubdown and Local Natives to round out my list.

I have a pretty similar taste in music to yourself so I'll list some music I've gotten into recently and some others you might like.

Feist - Female singer songwriter. Very original catchy stuff. I started with the album 'Let it Die' and it's great.

Balmorhea - Instrumental band with post rock and classical elements. I started with their new album 'Constellations' and love it. Definately going to start listening to some of their older stuff.

Wild Beasts - Great band playing the Academy this month.

And So I Watch You From Afar - Cracking Post/Math Rock. One of my favorite bands going at the moment and they put on an amazing live show. Playing ALT this month.

The Books - Experimental duo. Really nice quirky music . Recommend probably starting with the album 'The Lemon of Pink'.

Would also backup some of the posters above in recommending Joanna Newsom, The Tallest Man On Earth and Godspeed You Black Emperor.

    .....and mogwai.

    ehh...

    Weezer
    Idlewild

    are two glaringly shocking omissions

Seems we also share musical tastes quite a bit. I'll list a few myself:

If you're into Post-Rock, try out Battles. Their album Mirrored is a frightening display of technical talent; they're also good fun, and don't take themselves too seriously.

A big omission for me was The Flaming Lips - The Soft Bulletin is one of the best albums I've ever heard. Highly recommended.

Try Deerhunter for some absolutely gorgeous indie rock. Check out the album Microcastle.

Portishead - "Trip-hop" band from the 90s, after hiatus released an album in 2008. If you like Radiohead, check them out; There's even a video somewhere of Thom and Jonny covering this song. The latest album is Third.

Phoenix for some well-crafted pop/rock/electro type stuff. The album is Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix.

Try out The Beta Band - The Three E.P.'s for some great spaced-out, loopy jams with a bit of revolution no.9 antics thrown in as well; you might remember it from that scene in High Fidelity.

Field Music might appeal to your Beatles preferences, among other things; really talented musicians. The new album Field Music (Measure) is well worth a listen.

In terms of Irish bands, make sure to check out Villagers - Conor O'Brien is the best Irish songwriter going right now imo, and they haven't even released their debut album (coming out in May). If you can find it, check out The Hollow Kind EP. Fantastic stuff.

Also, I second Joanna Newsom - unbelievable talent (if you aren't irritated by her voice); try The Milk-Eyed Mender to start.

    Hope you find something there...

MASSIVE +1 on The Soft Bulletin.

There are other genres apart from Alternative rock and Pitchforkcore that are just as rewarding and interesting.

Time to go listen to it.

Two works that really changed my musical diet/outlook on music:

Miles Davis - Kind of Blue (probably most people's first jazz album) and Igor Stravinsky - The Firebird.
Took me a while to get into jazz and classical stuff, but once I did, man...

    Start at the end...

(That french horn never fails to grab my attention...)

If you like Kanye West, you could check out other music he produced.

    Common - Be is superb
He's also done some good stuff for Jay Z over the years.

At least give him an album Kold if you're going to snipe.

Let us know what you listen to ShoulderChip and what ya think.

    I'll give 3.

'Boards of Canada - The Campfire Headphase', 'Blu & Exile - Under the Heavens' and 'BT - This Binary Universe', go.

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,726 ✭✭✭pappyodaniel

Listen to the Broken Bells. Dangermouse collaborative with James Mercer from The Shins, best thing I've heard in a while.

  • Registered Users Posts: 12,778 ✭✭✭✭Kold

I don't get why you'd want to get a load of stuff that sounds like the stuff you already listen to.

Grab some Balmorhea, Deru, Pretty Lights, Autechre, Ceephax Acid Crew, Childs, Deltron 3030.

People like Bjork and Thom Yorke are definitely listening to this sort of stuff, try and branch out.

If you've never listened to DJ Shadow's Endtroducing, fix that.

I'd also recommend My Morning Jacket based on the list you provided.

  • Registered Users Posts: 72 ✭✭One_Armed_Dwarf

I would recomend Joanna Newsome aswell and you could try
    (Smog)
    Tom Waits
    Arab Strap
    Twilight Sad
    Tindersticks
    Pavement
    Bonnie 'Prince' Billy/Will Oldham

some of them might not be to your taste but i listen to alot of the music on your list and these are some of my favourite artists. (Sorry if any of them have been mentioned already I just skimmed over the thread)

One of the things I like to do is find out who my favourites listen to and see what I like, then find out who they listen to, and follow a few paths like that. I've found some great music that way.

And everyone should know some Autechre and Deltron 3030 [and, therefore, Del Tha Funkee Homosapien] ;)

Great suggestion of DJ Shadow, cashback! OP, If you find out you like DJ Shadow, check out The Avalanches too.

3 or 4 years ago, Thom said he liked Modeselektor so I looked them up and haven't looked back since.

A combination of Radiohead and The Flaming Lips got me into Autechre and Aphex Twin. Same for me.

Foals - New album out in may and doing a heineken green spheres gig in dublin as well
Fionn Regan - New album just out and also saw him in cork last week and thoroughly enjoyed it
Passion Pit - Played in the savoy in cork last week and supposedly were awsome.
Wild Beasts - Have a few dates in Ireland coming up in the next 2 weeks. Be warned though you should start with their 2nd album 'Two Dancers' 1st.

On a little aside OP, I think your selection of music need a round of applause apart from Eminem and the Saw Doctors of course, but we all have our weaknesses ;) Bravo Sir/Madam -Great taste :D

For more uptempo indie rock ..............................

You could try Tokyo Police Club's first EP (A lesson In Crime) the follow up album
was a bit meh, but the EP IMO is outstanding.

Tokyo Police Club - Nature Of The Experiment

Also the much maligned and now disbanded "The Rakes" first two albums (Capture/Release, Ten New Messages)
are much better than people give them credit for and if you like bloc party you should like them.

The Rakes - The World Was a Mess But His Hair Was Perfect

    For more breezy folksy sound...............................

You could try Turin Brakes first album (The Optimist) which is very good, they went to sh*t after this though
Turin Brakes - State of Things

Erlend Øye's first album as The Whitest Boy Alive (Dreams) is essential and a brilliant summer album,
I just love the guitar sound on this album, criminally underrated.

The Whitest boy alive - Golden Cage

    For some electronic stuff...................................

Last years self titled Moderat album is pretty good (Moderat = Modeselector + Apparat)

    Moderat - Rusty Nails

Apparat again this time with Ellen Allien, I like this album ALOT, it may not be to everyones tastes though so check samples first.

Ellen Allien & Apparat - Do Not Break

I will end with my favourite mix cd of all time (I am more into electronic than indie BTW)
which is only €6.49 from play.com for 2 cd's (bargain) and if you like this type of music essential.
Really emotive and almost depressing at times electronic, glitch, techno with a hint of indie,
(note there are 2 diff versions the youtube is the american version).

James Holden's At The Controls (check the youtube page the guy has the whole album up http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0xwLuqCoEBo)

    :pac:...

This isn't really what the guy is driving at.

He knows what he likes already - which is a fairly decently diverse spectrum, btw - but he's looking for suggestions with those in mind; Rather than more of exactly the same, or the implication that his personal taste is "wrong", or the always popular "Your tastes are too narrow. Here, this is precisely and exactly what I like" posts .

Coming into an Alternative/Indie forum to be a bit smug about alternative and indie music is just not cricket, is it?

And what is wrong with this ???

People are hardly going to post recommendations to stuff that they don't like, because you can't "honestly" recommend stuff you don't like.

    Bonnie 'Prince' Billy/Will Oldham

I'm a bit surprised not to see Bonnie 'Prince' Billy on the list too, seeing as the likes of Iron & Wine, Sufjan Stevens and Bon Iver are there. The Op has a great taste btw. Will Oldham is simply one of the greatest songwriters ever! I'd recommend these two as starters...Get ready for some seriously dark, haunting and beautiful music.

    APLR_22__40400__01152009120445-2585.jpgalbum200-17100.jpg

And Everyone should own this album..

    32420719.jpg

and this, which is possibly the best live recording ever..

    150199.jpg

    and this..

    stoneroses_album_300x300.jpg

If you like Iron & Wine you'll love Calexico. Beam is always playing/collaborating with them and actually wrote all the songs on the album In the Reins. This album is pure class..

    1230-feast-of-wire.jpg

And major +1's for The Pixies, Wilco, Nick Cave, Portishead and The Flaming Lips. I'd also recommend Massive Attack, Andrew Bird, M Ward, Eels, Elbow, Lcd Soundsystem and Stina Nordenstam. And all of Nick Drake's albums (pure timeless). I'm listening to a lot of The Cure lately, and to be perfectly honest most of their stuff sounds like it was only made yesterday. I'm really getting into the atm. Oh and my sig (if you can find the time) from the great man himself.
