I'm sure that he'll appear at some stage in this series. And now that Widmore is back I expect that we'll see him sooner rather than later.

He was also on the plane in the first episode, sitting beside Jack but then he disappeared mid-flight

I'd say Desmond will almost certainly come back. If they did leave him out, it would leave a huge plot-hole and a lot of fans would be very pissed off.

Where did he actually go though? What was his last appearance in the island timeline? I'm still catching up on a lot of things.

The last time we saw Desmond in the original timeline was in "The Variable" last season. He was recovering in hospital after being shot by Ben. He's been off-island since the season 4 finale.

He never came back to the island after escaping with the oceanic six.

Thanks. One more thing, if I may? (off topic but not worthy of its own thread): back in my day, there were a whole bunch of random survivors who were just played by extras and took no part in the story whatsoever. What happened to all the non-main-character survivors? Dead? Time travelled? Hiding in a cave somewhere?

    They are all dead.

    - several killed during the attack on New Otherton in season 4
    - several more killed when the freighter exploded in the season 4 finale
    - practically all of them in a flaming arrow attack by the Others in 1954 last season
    - and then the remaining seem to have been killed by a mine explosion shortly after

Rose and Bernard "retired" and were last seen in 1977.

A bunch probably died in the attacks on the Barracks by Keamy and his men. At least 3 anyway.

Faraday brought a load of them to the Freighter on the Zodiac raft, but the freighter exploded, so they died.

Then there was the flaming arrow attack during one of the time skips, more died there, and presumably some more were killed by the Others after that. I dunno how they all seemingly died yet Rose and Bernard survived, so there may still be more out there, but its doubtful

Re. Desmond - I think a big hint about his role in this series was given by the fact that his story was not mentioned at all in the pre-season sum-up episode. That said, the actor is mentioned every week in the credits....

From Desmond's point of view his search/struggle is over. His character has achieved everything he wanted - off island, with Penny, new family etc. No reason for him to get involved.

I think he made an appearance on the plane just to point out that in that timeline he was never on the island.

But, he's still credited as a full cast member, even though he hasn't been in the last 7 episodes. So something is going to bring him back. Maybe not to the island itself, but almost certainly the flash-sideways (considering how everyone else who has ever been in Lost is appearing in them)

He's obviously locked up on that submarine in the room Sawyer mentioned and apparently
ep 11 is about him, but rubbish

I dont think he's finished yet.. Hawkings told him in S5 Ep 6: 316
Eloise Hawking: I'm sorry to have to tell you this, Desmond, but the Island isn't done with you yet.

What if he just got reeeeeally sick and spend the remainder of the flight in the toilets?

Lol, we might get a flash-sideways with one of the characters still on the plane:

*opens toilet door, Desmond doubled over in pain*
Hurley: Dude, sorry! Erm....are you okay?
    Desmond: Yeah mate, dodgy vindaloo.

    Desmond mystery solved.
