I had unprotected sex... Is there a high risk of pregnancy? Or how likely is a positive result? How soon can I take a test?

Pregnancy test can be taken 4-6 days before next period is due.

HIV test, you need to wait 28 days for the virus to show up in blood. The rest of the STI test I think you can take soon as.

What do you know about the sexual history of the other person....

    When did it happen?

You can take the morning after pill up to 72 hours after having sex. The sooner the better.

I don't know a lot about the sexual history at all. I do know the guy. But not that much. I'm pretty worried. Don't really know what to do. Feel quite lost. I never even sleep with people and when I do, I'd always use protection... I feel so so stupid and ashamed of myself for being so careless.

In relation to your monthly cycle - do you know what day you were at when you had sex?

I'm not sure... I had my period two weeks before I had sex. I don't know the days too well

try not to stress too much, there is no point worrying about it now. everyone makes stupid mistakes sometimes, and hopefully you'll be more careful to not let it happen again now.

book an STI check. the sooner you get it out of the way, the sooner your mind will be at ease. you might not have contracted any of them, and to be fair, most of them are easily sorted with some antibiotics.

according to your timeline, your next period is due soon enough anyway, so at least you don't have another three weeks to stress about that either. if you miss it, take a test. just remember that stressing about it not coming can cause it to be delayed a day or two!!

just try not to panic,it won't do you any good. no matter what happens it's not the end of the world.

Thank you so much that was a really nice post. I'm more scared than anything else, I don't want to have caught anything. It'd be really embarrassing.
I don't even know how to book an STI test... Are they expensive and painful?
I probably sound like an idiot I'm just not used to this kind of thing and wasn't expecting for this to happen.

How likely is it that I could get pregnant from this... If I was to take a test would it show now?

    Hi OP,

In terms of booking an STI check (and depending on where you are) check out this thread: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=152605 There's some very helpful info in there.

If I was you, I'd ring the likes of a Well Woman Centre as they're a fantastic and very friendly organisation IMO and even if you choose not to book with them you can ask them for advice on how long before you can get tested.

There are a number of tests which, if taken too soon after exposure, can give you a false positive/negative result and you will then need to be retested and I don't think you'll want to have to go through it twice!

In terms of price, there are a number of free clinics (details in thread above) or you can pay. I think it's €145 in the WW (125 if you're a student) and Dr Freedman also seems to come highly recommended in Dublin as well if you choose to pay.

As the other posters have said, try not too worry yourself sick, you made a mistake and it happens to lots of people. Best of luck over the coming weeks :)

Really you guys have helped me so much. I wasn't expecting everyone to be so nice and helpful. I really really appreciate it. It's made me feel like a human again :)

I figured out when I had my last period, it was around the 25/26th of February. So I am looking at possibly having a period next Sunday? Should I take a test around that time?

I will let you all know how things go regarding news. Whether it be what I want or not :)
