Hi.Can anyone tell me what the correct oil grade is for a vw golf mk5 1.4l (55kw , 75bhp) engine (not fsi).

It is confusing to say the least when I google it,there seems to be so many opinions out there.

I service it every 10k miles (15k kms).

The manual says 501.00 , 503.00. But I have also read on the net that the correct grade is 504.00 , 507.00. Unless this is for the fsi engine?

Would my best bet be something like castrol edge 5w30 or mobil 1 esp 5w30 or am I wrong with these choices for my engine?
Both pretty expensive, but I suppose you get what you pay for.

I think you are confusing yourself needlessly, something that I did a while back when I got my car, whats printed in the manual is what you put in it basically. I know google can say otherwise but thats google.

But what has confused you on the internet is that some of the newer grades are "backwards compatible" but if you can find the grade thats in the manual you are fine.

For example my car takes the 505.00 standard but the 505.01 will work in it also and I think there is a newer 507 or something that works in it also.

I think Total Quartz 9000 meets the standard you need. I think.

It would be nice to find a list of what does work but untill you can find a rock solid list then Id just stick to whats in the manual.

Personally, although there are other standards like 505.01 that can work in my engine I use the 505.00. Its easier to get and I know it works.

Also, Im almost positive that you will need a fully synth oil.

Regarding your best bet use what was the standards in your manual. They should be clearly written on the bottle. Some say recommended but they actually arent approved by the manufacture, but if someone else can shed some light on that twould be nice.

Google the brands you have in your local store and find the list of approved manufacturers from the brands website.

Tbh any decent quality semi synth 10w40 would be grand.

Go on opieoils.co.uk you can put in your make & model and it pops out a list of suggested oils. A good starting point anyway :)

    Thanks for the replies.

    The engine is 1.4l 55kw

Just had a look at my manual and it states.

Vehicles with longlife service - use high-lubricity multigrage oil - VW 503.00

Vehicles without longlife service - use high-lubricity multigrage oil - VW 500.00, VW 501.01 or VW 502.00

    1. Would I be right in saying that as I change the oil and filter every 10k miles (15k kms) that I am not on the longlife service, or how does that work?

    2. Would I also be right in saying that while the above are the min standards that must be met, that a higher grade oil such as castrol edge 5w30 which conforms to vw504.00 and vw507.00 would be even better for the engine?

    3. I take it at the very least I should be looking for fully syntetic?

Thanks again for you help. One day I will fully understand it!

    1) Almost definitely you are not on the longlife service.

    2) No. No minimum or maximum standard. A standard is a standard and what VW print in the manual is what needs to be used* Like I have said earlier these newer standards can be backwards compatible but they are by no means a better oil for the engine, they merely meet the standard for a newer engine, possibly the TSI like you said but that doesnt mean they are better.

Ill try and explain it a bit to make it clearer.

I have a 1.9 TDI from the year 2000. It is whats called a VE TDI. Lets just call it an old tdi.
Around 2000 and 2002 VW introduced a newer TDI, called a PD.

This was a serious upgrade compared to the older one and it called for a new type of oil for the engine. So, they made the VW505.01 standard. These newer TDI must explicitly run on oil that meets this standard, no other. Now, it just happens that the only oil that can be used for this newer TDI can actually be used in an older one too but it has no extra benefits for the older engine. It just happens to be fine for it. And thats good because there is more selection out there incase you local store doesnt stock much oil.

You may find that the 504 and 507 standards were created to suit newer engines and their more specific needs but they just happen to work in the older engines too.

    * there may be tables and lists on the web that confirm how these standards overlap.

    Thanks for that bbk.

My wife was in town earlier, not back yet and I got her to pick up the castrol edge 5w-30. Even though it is 504.00 and 507.00 , I should be ok with that right.as I think it is backwards compatable?

Probably a bit of an overkill although going by what you have said. :)

Im not sure about the petrol engine oils but it seems that your research has shown that it is grand.

I wouldnt worry about it being overkill because its a newer standard, im sure there are 505.01 oils out there that are quite expensive. You are using a good brand and it has the standards you need. You could have a chance to have a good shop around sometime to see whats what too.

Anyway, its good that you are keeping a keen eye on this sort of thing. Your engine will thank you years down the line ;)

    Keep on truckin

Need some oil again for the golf mentioned above. Castrol Edge is getting very expensive, although it must be doing a good job as its not missed a beat in 180k miles. I think VW are using Quantum in their garages. The 5w30 that I see for sale online states longlife.Anyone know if this is also the correct one to use on fixed 10k mile intervals or if they have another product for that?
