App for SMS Character Count - Is there one?

The conspiracy theorist in me wonders why Apple would continue to omit the most screamingly obvious feature from their phone?

A quick Google suggets that AT&T, and their interest in getting people to overuse their SMS allocation may have something to do with it.

Either way, it's pretty comtemptible, in my view.

    But, I digress.......

Is there an App that will count SMS characters within the iPhone SMS client?

Or do I have to jailbreak in order to install one such as this? >

    Thanks.

    yes you need to jailbreak,
when you do, you'll see a new app on your springboard called Cydia
its a jailbreak community portal, it has a search facility, for apps you wont get in app store, customizable tweaks etc,
search "sms counter" and press install, happy days, you will now have an sms counter as requested !
