Going to work in the big smoke, (bye bye Mullingar)
Will be signing with a GP in Dublin.

    • Can someone tell me what makes a GP a GP ?
    • Are there any letters or qualifications or are they just hospital doctors who have left the hospital behind.
    • How can I check that he or she is qualified??

GPs must have obtained a postgraduate qualification in general practice. Usually they will have the letters MICGP after their name if they have completed this training in Ireland, or MRCGP if they did it in the UK.

That should cover most GPs in Ireland.

Others may have done GP training in another EU country, or possibly Australia, New Zealand or South Africa.

There are also other 'medical doctors' who practice in a similar way to GPs but have no post-graduate qualification specifically in general practice and are not affiliated with any GP training body. They are not entitled to call themselves GPs, but their patient's may assume they are.

So, to answer your question, look for MICGP or MRCGP after their name.....unless you find another doctor you would prefer to go to, then maybe you could google their qualifications.

Check the medical register on www.medicalcouncil.ie
If they are fully certified as a GP they should be on the Specialist register for General Practice.
Being on that confirms they are a fullt qualified GP (although not being on it does not mean they aren't entitled to be just they have not got aroung to geting all the paperwork procesed)
Another option would be to check if they have a GMS list as you need to be fully qualified to have this.
FTR older GP's and some trained abroad may not have a postgraduate GP qualification but are still fully certified GP's.

    Clear as mud ;)

Think you are wrong here, any medical doctor can call themselves a GP as it is not a regulated or protected title

Someone cannot say they are a specialist in general practice as that is protected but the term GP or general practitioner is not

See above anyone can call themselves a GP

That is the best way I agree although there are a number of people who have this award who did not go through any specialist training as they were grandfathered in
