Heading into town around 10 tonight and just before the Frascati shopping centre on the left, there they were. 2 high viz jacketed constables avec le "tripod". A car had obviously been pulled over, sitting just passed the tripod hazards flashing and the driver was just walking away from the tripod with one of the guards. The other one was just starting to peer through the eyepiece as I passed by. What are the chances of being done? I should say I only checked afterwards, but that stretch of road is 50kmh and I'm sure I was doing somewhere north of that figure :( I assume "tripod" means camera or do they have to stop you? Thanks in advance for any opinions!

I know paranoia is an awful thing and if you're over the limit there's no excuse but one last question! Given that the gardai had pulled a car over, does that hold out any hope for me?

As silly as it sounds, you wont know until you know. No point worrying about it now, if you were caught, you cant do anything. How many points do you have already?

Yeah you're right...best to try and forget it!
2 already but they disappear this August.

usually they pull you over, so if you weren't pulled there's a good chance you might not have been caught.

But having said that I know some of the hairdryers they have can save the images and speeds so there is a chance you may get a fixed penalty notice, but I'd say its a slim one.

If it was on a tripod it captures the speed and picture of the reg so they wouldn't have stopped anyone "speeding", they'll just get the letter in the post

It's wait and hope so! Wonder why they pulled the other car over and even stranger why she was walking away from the tripod with the 2nd garda?!

Anyway, I was in the other half's car so I assume, if there's a letter, they get it and I admit I was behind the wheel and take the points?

Final question (just curious!), a little off-topic - what happens in the case of a company car? Letter addressed to company?

    The bone lazy buggers.

That spot is literally on the other side of the road of the Garda station, and certainly not a black spot.

The tripod camera only works manually, if there was no guard spying through the eyepiece you are one lucky boy, he has to take the picture by pressing the trigger, they don't work automatically. Even if it does flash don't worry, fixed speed traps will flash even when they are out of film or no film at all in them.

A Traffic corps copper sitting to my extreme right sipping a bud assures me you will be fine.

I'd guess it was a laser gun, given that they had a car pulled over as you passed, I'd say it was a regular speed check and if you weren't pulled you'd be *warned* but OK.

It depends on the company, company I'm with it goes straight to the driver, I was caught speeding in our 'pool' car though and never got the fcpn and ended up in court. Judge didn't give a toss and gave me a €250 fine along with 4 points for my trouble

Thanks Pokerface, Just as I was about to pass the tripod the second garda had just stuck her eye to the eyepiece but let's hope she didn't "nab" a pic of me or that it was a conventional "they have to stop you" setup. Still can't understand why they had the female driver they'd pulled, over at the tripod?? Perhaps showing her a speed readout?

Could have been one of a million things - they might have noticed she had a bulb gone, or no tax disc, or was driving erratically, or that the car had been involved in a cross continent retrieval of nazi gold and was being tracked by secret satellite technology through the fillings in her teeth. It was probably something dull like a bulb though.

She was prob clearly speeding so they signalled for her to pull in for a 'chat' and whilst there check her tax & insurance etc

Its actually 60km/hour on the Blackrock bypass not 50 so if you were only doing 55-65 you're probably fine.

Pretty sure the Gardai tripod's can't do photo's at night. I can't be 100% sure but a flash would be a nightmare to use and IR would be no go without serious investment. Also, he would have had to have got two pulls of the trigger to verfy the speed then snap a photo. So in your timeframe I would doubt he would have got a photo (or two, don't you need two for a conviction?)

Also, Laser at night is also not recommended (even by the manufacturers). But I wouldn't worry has there is also a rake of other stuff in the manual the Gardai don't do on a regular basis

I'd put money on you'll be fine seeing as you weren't pulled over.
