Because Irish DTT is a test!

Take the time to search, there's hundred's of threads/ posts about it.

It's not a full service yet. What you and everyone is getting at the moment is a DTT test service. TV3 gone this week back next week so on so on until the full digital service is available.

Yeh I knew it was a test alright....just couldn't find anything using the search because TV3 is too short to search for sorry. I'll just have to check it on a daily basis so...thanks

The difference this time is that in addition to the test card, the TV3 channel name has gone and is replaced with "RTENL" and all epg data for TV3 has also disappeared. This appears to be a major change from before.

Taking a stab in the dark here - have the engineering tests come to an end? Are we moving into a pre-launch phase which will require DTT multiplex, distribution and transmission contracts to be signed by TV3?

I think you are good at shots in the dark, sounds like that to me. I presume TV3 are not paying for DTT transmision on the test network. As you say, end game time.

Further thoughts on the above. Onevision are in negotiations with RTENL about carriage costs of DTT; TV3 are part of Onevision; TV3 are suddenly dropped from DTT carriage.

    Hmmmmmmm.

TV3 is a must carry after analogue switch off at the end of 2012.
Yes they will have to pay for their carriage but they must be carried.

Yes they will have to pay for their carriage but they must be carried.

There is a provision in the Broadcasting Act for them to be carried on the RTÉ Mux if required otherwise they can be carried on one the commercial muxes. As they are part of the OneVision consortium carriage on a commercial mux may be the cheaper option.

The downside if they are carried on one of the commercial muxes they may not be available from many of the smaller relays which may only carry the RTÉ Mux.

That does not worry them at the moment, they only get carriage on the main analogue transmitters at the moment. Maybe they are not prepared to pay for that last 20% of the population.

The test screen switches between TV3 and TG4.

    TV3 is currently named RTÉNL.

Yes the reason they arent on as Sam says RTE NL are paying the bills alone.

RTE NL havent announced the launch date yet (its October by all accounts) so until then you will have these scenarios. A catch 22 for all.

I have the same problem, I get RTE 1, 2, TG4, other radio channels but not TV3, doesn't show up at.

Any help? Live in the South Dublin area. Thanks.

Even so TV3 will not pay for carriage until either forced to by Government or the number of viewers is eating into their analogue figures.

Does that mean that TV3 analogue is not carried on local transponders ? I think in my area I do not get signals direct from Mullaghanish but from a local relay. I cannot get TV3 analogue even tho it's stated to be transmitted from Mullaghanish. I assumed they would ALL be relayed ?

I cannot get the digital data at all... may be poor antanna ? or maybe the tests are not ongoing in my area ?

TV3 is not available from many transmitters. Only the main transmitters and one or two more have TV3

I think I read here (boards) that RTE were obliged legally to carry TV3.
Are RTE not conforming ? in respect of relays ?

And will the same apply when DTT is active ?

Do you think that RTÉ should carry TV3 for free?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 582 ✭✭✭Anchises

    Short answer : No :).

I suspect that some business arrangement has been worked out with TV3 - since they do carry it to main transmitters.

Would there be an additional expense in relaying it ?
And if so, surely TV3 would wish to reach the biggest audience possible ...and might be willing to engage with RTE.

I'm assuming TV3 do not get a slice of the licence fee

I'm just a little surprised that transmission is restricted as it is to main transmitters.
What about us guys in the fringe areas ?

Maybe I should read up all the other references to TV3.
It's hard to find them - can't search on TV3 (three letters)

    A.

It's TV3's choice. They won't pay the full price.

The price is regulated and fair. It's simply that TV3 chooses to not pay for full coverage, no doubt the extra cost outwieghs extra revenue. Technically TV3 are in breach of licence.

It is very likely that they will be forced to pay for the full coverage or else be heavily fined and maybe even lose their broadcasting license altogether. The cheek of them and with so many people in the country even unable to view TV3 already in crappy old analogue. 3e should also be carried along with a few others on DTT but that's another discussion. We have so few national stations for launching the Irish DTT service.

Well that has been a issue for some time. Tv3 do not have the same % targets when it comes down to analogue terrestrial TV coverage that RTE are mandated to cover as PSB. Being a licensed "terrestrial station" you could be forgiven for thinking that it would be in TV3s commercial interest to cover as much of the country as possible. But then again there is also that over dependence on $ky. So when is a terrestrial station not a terrestrial station. Suppose it depends on the context of when you use that term and how you use it.

Hopefully DTT will make near universal coverage a given for all terrestrial stations.

TV3 were ment to be a MMDS/Cable service in the early 1990s and TV3's former CEO Rick Hetherington had suggested getting an OfCom licence and broadcasting into Ireland via England via Cable and Satellite, he would reduce costs (no expensive Irish programmes and no loss of viewers).

I already have precisely such a service. It is called "ITV1 HD" and it does not carry expensive Irish programming like TV3 news and Vincenzo Brown and the breakfast stuff and the Lorraine Chick program where they dress up and look cute in South Dublin somewhere.....maybe as far out as the Curragh one day a year....budget permitting.

You forgot the 'Midlife' programme that is on in the early afternoon, where middle aged ladies talk about their frustrations and then discuss other things they know little or nothing about.

I genuinely thought that was called "the week in politics on tv3" and then I completely forgot about it Sam just like you accused me of there.

Midday, however Midlife might be a more appropriate name or Menopause.

In fairness to Midday they really capture the essence of a group of gossiping ould bats who, as said above, know absolutely nothing about the topic at hand.

I'd have said, they captured a cheap copy of itv's loose women [which tv3 used to show at that time]-copy of loose women=no original thought by the programme makers whatsoever.

I have ITV but they are the same as TV3. They show nothing worth watching most of the time :)

............... or by the participants. Unless by original, you mean off the wall based on ignorance and a misunderstanding of the topic.
