    my sister just rang.

    She has a 97 fiesta.

Flashing red P and a ! mark in a circle showing.

    what are these related to?

! in a circle is generally the handbrake sign, if its flashing it usually means a braking system fault/failure. Is it an auto-box or manual? P usually indicates something to do with parking, e.g. the handbrake or the Park position on an auto.

I've a Ford handbook here somewhere but I can't find it right now.

Id say its brake fluid level warning. See if it needs toppin up. Or maybe she just drove with the handbrake on for so long that the car thought it better start flashing to get her attention :)

You may not know because it's your sister's car, but is the 'P' referring to the P in the picture above? If so, it's a problem with the brakes - tell her to check the brake fluid.

could be just something like a pen, caught in the handbrake switch ( I'm assuming she let it off;))

the handbrake light doesn't flash when the handbrake is on does it?
