Need a car quick

I wrote off my car this morning. Thankfully nobody else was involved and everything ok except my car (and the wall). But it was on old Citroen Xantia, not worth much and won't be worth getting it fixed.

I'm just wondering if there is any general advice on the process of deciding on a new car (I don't mean new in the brand new sense). I would appreciate any advice on where to look, websites, dealers/makes. The North or UK (any good websites for cars there), what cars not to buy or dealers to avoid, any other common pitfalls. I am based in Galway...I need a car to get to work everyday so can't exactly wait too long...I hope to have access to my brother's car for a week as he's on hols.

Not sure whether to buy a banger to get me buy while I suss out what is out there instead of rushing into a decision on what is available this week....

I drive around 300-400 miles a week. I am looking for a comfortable (hard to beat the Xantia on this criteria) diesel car and I would be willing to spend up to 7k on the right car. Not even sure I should bother spending that? Only expecting to get €500-€1000 from insurance on the crashed car.

Anyway, I would be grateful to hear any general or specific info.

I recommend a Yaris diesel (1.4 D4D camchain engine), comfy and very economical (63mpg) with 90bhp and 0-100kmph in 10.7 secs , so not slow to accelerate.
Worth a look when you go shopping around.

For that kind of money you could get a 2002-2003 BMW 320d

me though i'd go for a mondeo diesel. €7k would get you a 2006 model. It's the old version but they're great cars to drive, very comfortable and reliable. Also a similar size to your xantia. Only thing against it would be that they're starting to look dated (and that's from someone who owns one).

Did you claim the insurance or is he cars yours to dispose of?

Alternatively you could get yourself into a nice 2000 1.8 petrol Xantia with FSH and 65k miles with a decent offer. ;)

Honda Accord, you'll get some of your money back when you go to sell it on too.

I think I am getting €1500 from insurance. I am thinking about getting a Jag X-Type Diesel? Any advice for or against this car?

My brother-in-law just got a Jag X-Type diesel. Changed from a Merc C-Class! He's delighted with it. Should be good for 45mpg too...

I think your definition of slow to accelerated may differ from many others.
A Yaris is about a comfortable as a bed of nails compared to a big car like the Xantia. The Yaris is a fine car but not something I would like to drive 400 miles a week in.
