just been offered a water damaged iPhone (jumped into swimming pool with it in his pocket) for free.

Can they be fixed at all?
dont mind paying for it to be fixed.....or just cheaper to buy a working second hand one?

It would depend on the extent of the water damage really. No harm to take it off his hands and take it apart.

But for immersion in a swimming pool, I would safely say that it's completely boned.

My 3GS set in a puddle of water on a bed (so nowhere near fully submerged) for about 10 seconds and got given the last rights by the engineer in my job once he cracked it open. Apple followed suit and replaced it.

If the phone was on, or tried to be turned on when it went splash then its safe to say the logic board will have shorted and if thats blown then the phone will be BER (beyond economical repair) because a new logic board is around €300

Then you've the other components to worry about, LCD moisture damaged, antenna erosion, battery terminals erosion.

I'd bet its dead. Sorry man.

Check if the mosture indicators have turned pink, if they havnt i'd take it home, dry it out and chance a warrenty repair :pac:

It's what the insurance company (yes the insurance company!!) did with my phone after I got it wet, and Apple replaced it under their warrenty... fools lol

If it turns out that the chips/board are dead, but that the display/case is ok, sell it for spares to someone who has dropped theirs, and needs a screen or case - when I worked in a big office, where lots of people had BlackBerrys, over the years, I ended up re-using the displays from a good few drowned BBs to repair ones that had been dropped or sat upon.
