I made my first order with Modcloth last wk, $185 of clothes (10% discount) then $35 delivery charge and total charged to my bank €151. UPS have just arrived and are demanding €51, how does this occur?? I'm kinda raging. Any experience

Custom charges. Alwways a risk when you buy something outside the European Union. Customs are clamping down on purchases outside the E.U, think if you order something over $50 (open to correction on the amount) you are liable to pay taxes and charges on the item. Its pot luck if you get caught really.

Thanks it's such a dose as it really will turn me off ordering online, is it possible to get breakdown. I guess a harshly worded email to Modcloth will do no good as it's not their fault

Not sure if you can get a break down. Yep your right Modcloth have nothing to do with it, its the Government you want to complain to. Its just pot luck really in the 10 years I've been ordering stuff from the states Ive only been caught twice and have paid about €35 each time, so its worth the risk if you really want something!

Thanks for that, I've worked out anyway just in case anyone is interested. They charge customs duty at 12% on total cost (my case €150) equalling €18. This is added to cost (€168) which is multiplied by Vat 21% (€35), giving a grand total of €203 and having already spent €150 i'm charged €50 extra. I'm waiting for the UPS guy to come back so I hope they were worth it.

    That's correct.

You will be charged duty at the appropriate rate on your purchase.

This is added and then VAT is calculated on the total (incl shipping costs).

It can get quite expensive if you didn't factor it in when purchasing.

Sorry I'm back again, now I want to return dresses, to be honest I don't think the quality is that great, but does anyone know how to claim refund of VAT and customs duty. Thanks

I genuinely don't know if an unregistered person can claim back VAT. Perhaps you could contact Customs to see if you can claim back the duty.
