Fully comp insurance within the EU - unreasonable?

Going on a bit of road trip this summer so looking to insure the defender I needed fully comp for throughout europe.

Called around and my best quote said that yes - that included fully comp throughout - It didn't at all when I actually read through the papers when I got them.

To get fully comp throughout EU on a commercial was an additional 1600 (Ouch!). Needless to say that disk is in the post on its way back to where it came from.

So I'm looking for insurance again - considering that the first time around over the phone I was promised things they couldn't deliver so I'm a bit worried now.

Considering how much extra they wanted - many times more than I paid - Is fully comp in the EU an unreasonable request?

Any way of if this happens again - promise over the phone but something else in the papers that I can make it stick to them?

Oh yes - so it's a 02 Defender 110 hard top on commercial insurance.

Good luck, be interested to see how you get on!

I'm with AXA and they insure for the whole of the EU but for 30 days max, with the lack of jobs here, I'm finding myself back in UK more often plus I'm looking at an a long trip to Bulgaria later in the year.

You'd think that you could get insurance anywhere in the EU for the whole EU, would put all the companies here out of business though! :D

I'm OK with them only allowing me to be out of the country for 30 days in a go. But during those 30 I want a bit better coverage.

They will cover "minimum required by law" Which in most cases translate to 3rd party only. Don't know in the EU but around the world the "minimum required by law" can be pretty close to nothing at all and I don't want to find myself in that position.

Sean, I believe your motor is registered as a passenger - the 30 day limit in one go still apply but getting fully comp is pretty easy and shouldn't cost any extra.

On my insurance now - had it been a passenger it would have been fine but as it is a commercial they don't want to cover it.

register as a commercial - damned if you do damned if you dont....

    Right-o Insurance has been sorted.

I get 30 days (in total for the year) in the EU fully comp. with Setanta.

After having been navigating the insurance mine field I must ask - how do the people do who overland to south africa and the likes.

I suppose there are specialist companies - may be worth checking out, considering the price of insurance in Ireland it may not be that pricy to get the truck covered by Lloyds in London :D

alot of overlanders buy insurance at the borders but that more often than not is only buying a piece of paper and not much more.

minimum by law is basicly 3rd party for the policy period.
