Yes it can be done, i have that set up.

Firstly, You will need an Ethernet cable long enough to go from your PC to your PS3

Secondly, Go to Start > Control Panel > Network Connections > Left Click Data Modem > Properties > Advanced > Enable the options under Internet connection Sharing > OK

Unplug your modem, Plug it in again, Try a Connection under settings on the ps3 XMB, Click Wired.

*The bad thing is you will need the laptop turned on and connected to use the internet on the PS3

Click on Start button > Run > and Type command cmd > Press [enter] key

At DOS prompt type the command:
    C:\>ipconfig /all

    Try entering your settings manually.

Sorry dude, i'm stumped so. I have XP. Try the automatic Setup again and play around with the settings, you might get it to work.

Connect to the net as usual on your PC, on your PS3 go through your connection settings but let everything on automatic then restart the console and try to connect. If it still gives a DNS error you might have to enable IPv6 on your PC network adaptor (same as windows 7), give it a google there are loads of tutorials on it.

The DNS error is a total pain if you google that you will be chasing your tail there seems to be thousands of people with the same problem but no solution :(
