Does anybody use it? Is it worth buying? While it does sound quite handy it also just seems really lazy to me. Surely if you know your own tunes should be able to guage what will mix well???

I was going to try it, until I learned that the current version can't read AAC tracks, which a lot of my music is. Might try it when they fix that. I did use it a bit on a few MP3s, and it did sound great, but with Traktor you can change the key anyway, and just do it manually.

excuse my retardedness - but AAC files are what now?

I'm using Torq, which also has a manual key change. I was reading stuff on the DJ TechTools site and a few heads were bigging up mixed in key. It's only just over $50. But in saying that, I think I'd rather spend that few quid on music unless it was gonna seriously add to the sound of a mix

AAC = MPEG-4, as in the standard iTunes format. So all the files I have from CDs etc (before I started buying online) can't be read by Mixed In Key...which is a fairly big flaw.

gotcha. I'd have the same issues so, and I won't bother with it then.

I think I remember reading on the website that making it m4a compatible is going to be in the next update, so I may well give it a go then.

It's actually something I wouldn't use for DJ-ing, but it can be quite handy for samples - get your sample libraries all sorted through Mixed In Key and you can grab and select various pads, chords, notes, textures without having to spend ages doing the whole trial and error thing...

The only reason I'd consider using it as a DJ would be if I was gigging four times in a weekend and getting sent upwards of 50 tunes a week.

This came up before, have a read of these threads:

Depends on your music style but I don't really think its necessary... I know one guy who uses it every time, and for some reasons his mixes are a little boring - they are kinda 'too smooth'. Sometimes I like things to change around, often its the little imperfections that give things character.

post by (cm)tyranny - in fairness, you use software that beatmatches your tunes and now you want to use a plugin that tells you which tunes go together nicely?

you might as well just put on a cd and stand around waving your arms at the crowd like gigi d'agostino...

knowing how not to clash keys and how to move between them to shift moods gradually without being too sudden is one of the core skills of being a good player of music...

taking the instinct and the need to know your records / cds / files inside out just takes the fun and the skill out of it..

you don't get anything for nothing in this life, why should you get a free set of musical ears because you have a harmonic mixing plugin???

that kinda sums it up I suppose. While it defo sounds like it might come in useful it does kinda take away from the skill and dedication of putting time into really getting to know your own tracks. I was curious about it but I reckon i'll give it a swerve for now
