I'm travelling to the US in May. I currently have an out of date US passport and an up-to-date Irish one. Is it worth getting my old US one renewed? Or should I just travel on the Irish one?

If you are a US citizen you must use your US passport to enter the US.

I was in the exact same situation as you.
I didnt know this law until the day before I was leaving New Zealand last year, going to the states (still here!) with no out bound ticket to return to Ireland.
Had to get an emergency passport in Auckland. Its very much possible to travel on the Irish passport, Ive done it a few times (before being aware of the law). If you cant get the american one, then by all means belt away on the Irish one as long as, and this is very important... you have a ticket to leave the U.S. and can produce it.
Imagine me, big Irish head on me, sitting in the US Embassy in Aucland looking for an American passport to leave the next day, in New Zealand. They musta been a few heads stratched that day!
Also, when the officer in LAX airport say my temp US passport, he asked for my Irish passport and spotted that I had been threw LAX the year before from Oz, on the Irish one, he wasnt happy but he left me off thank god!

I think the only way they would catch you is if it has your birthplace [american] on your passport.

If you are intending to travel with the purpose of assassinating a leading Palestinian on behalf of the Israeli secret service, than the Irish passport is recommended.

I would imagine US Passport control would be able to tell if you used your Irish one but are a US Citizen!
