RTE may yet show it instead of The passion of the Christ. I think the vintners will settle for this!;)

Under the present contract Setanta have exclusively live rights for ML rugby in Ireland with RTE able to show highlights on 'Against The Head' (Mondays on RTE 2 at 8.00pm). From next season according to reports RTE/TG4 will take over the live rights.

It appears its going to be on Setanta Sports 1 only, I'm afraid. That is what makes it even more annoying that it will be played on Good Friday. If it was on Setanta Ireland, it'd be no hassle for most as Chorus NTL viewers get Setanta Ireland as part of their basic package. Likewise if it was any other day, if it was on Setanta Sports 1 you'd go to the pub. This situation unfortunately puts most people in the worst of both worlds.

In otherwords, if you don't have a ticket to Thomond Park, or a **premium** Setanta subscription (ie you have subscribed to Setanta Sports on satellite or Setanta Sports 1 as a standalone channel on UPC - at €15 p.m, not great value), you won't be seeing this game live. All the rest of us can hope for is a full rerun on Setanta Ireland at 10:00pm, which occassionally happens in these circumstances.

What ya mean the rest of us. I'm here with a TV with rabbit's ears - lucky to get RTE 1 + 2 on a good day - still apart from the DEN and 24 there's nothing on anyway. Perhaps the match will be on IraqGoals? :(

That's why I think the pubs around the two provinces should be onto Setanta threatening to withdraw their subscription unless the match is moved, the timing effects far more than the pubs/clubs in Limerick.

If you have Eircom broadband you can watch it on their website. Decent stream too.

Ahhhhh....it's times like this that make me glad I live in the UK...honestly, what nonsense, closing pubs in an allegedly modern secular democracy because of, what is imo, some 2000 year old fairy tale. You couldn't make it up. I mean lets face it, its not as if most people wont be out of their gourds by 2 O'Clock anyway with drink procured in the off licences in panic buying (lol) the day before. What utter hypocrisy...daft, daft, daft...

Don't tar us all with the same brush Toome, I've never had a drink on Good Friday and most people I know won't either. It (religion) still means something to alot of people and not just a fairy tale as you put it.
I'm not overly religious or anything but your comment may be offensive to alot of people.

I collected tokens in the independent for 2 months of Setanta for €5, should get a call from a Setanta agent to set it up next week so it should last until the end of the season. :)

Accept my apologies buck, wasn't my intent to offend, nothing but respect for your principled position on that.

It is looking more and more like the Magners league decision to host this game on Friday will lead to an eventual revision of the licencing laws in this country to reflect its secular nature.

    Hurrah for rugby.

Ah no was afraid of that, normally head to the pub to watch this game cause its always on Setanta 1... I have eircom though, can anyone confirm that they will definitely show this even though its on setanta 1? I thought they only streamed Setanta Ireland.

Is it not Setanta's decision to play this on Good Friday as oppose to the Magner's Leagues decision

Yes but the pubs won't do that.
The reason is because if they withdraw their subscription, they won't be able to show the football games live and I bet that those games bring in an awful lot more punters than a few Magners League matches.

The final decision was made by Celtic rugby after consultation with Munster, Leinster and Setanta.

I can't believe the fuss over the pubs closing. It goes to show how much life in this country is about drink. Its actually sad.

In fairness, there are multiple reasons for this. For many the pub is the only location that they can actually watch the match, especially as it is not on Setanta Ireland.

    +!

It also shows how much sport is about drink.

Prior to I getting Setanta at home I used to head to a local pub with my family where we usually had food, minerals, tea/coffee, I may have been in the minority about not consuming alcohol but I certainly wasn't on my own. That option is not available for this match.

Can pubs open legally and just not serve alcohol?

I'm fairly sure 'licenced premises' aren't allowed open. Well. Relatively sure. Hmmm. Slightly hopeful?
