Is the Llanddona transmitter a non starter?

Simple as that, is there even any point me trying?

I'm in Wicklow town, about 50M above sea level, as I've confirmed in another thread anything South of Arfon just seems a waste of time here.

I've searched this forum and did a bit of Googling and can't seem to find any reports of Llanddona being receivable.

Does power mean nothing, is it all about the height??

It is reported on another forum that Llanddona is shielded to the West although I have never seen that confirmed in public sources. Its main problem is that like B-P it has much lower HAAT than Preseli or Arfon. That makes it difficult to close the link budget. Also its on the Eastern part of the island and its quite mountainous and it doesn't even cover all of Anglesey. You could try it to see what happens but 50 metres above sea level might not be enough. You can look at google maps, megalithia or the wolfbane site. The problems in Wales with Llanddona's coverage are well known: that is why Classic FM rejected it in favour of, you've guessed it, Arfon for its main NW Wales transmitter. Had Arfon been made the main NW Wales UHF station the consequences for overspill would have been striking. The tests of the last few months seem to indicate that Preseli and Arfon are easy and reliable where they could be received in analogue, and in the case of B-P you have to be outside the null and have sufficient height. More details on these Txs including their HAATs are at mb21.co.uk

Thanks, just what I thought :(

Had some business up in Bray today so took the coast road home and scanned for possible non Arfon aerials, I only saw one in Kilcoole, looked to be pointed in the right direction but one out of probably 200+ aerials I saw doesn't make it look like a runner.

This is a very interesting Arqiva planning application for the Trefor relay fed from Llanddona on the northern part of the Lleyn peninsula , just across from Wicklow. They are replacing the two logs by a trough because the digital signal received ex Llanddona is not good enough with the logs to relay Llanddona's digital services.!!! I conclude LLanddona is shielded to the West.

It has been good news for Preseli and Arfon. And sooner or later RTENL will have to give up on the quadruple illumination from Mount Leinster, and in 2012 Divis will be a force to be reckoned wiith. The fact that Arqiva are struggling to get a LLanddona signal less than 20 miles away says it all... Meantime Freesat sails serenely on..
