Thanks! Yes the only thing is though i have seen dresses on the monsoon website before that i thought were gorgeous and then when i saw them in the shop they were let's say "meh"! So hope this is nice when i find it in the shop

I'm not really mad on straps though - usually go for strapless so don't know how it would look on me

It's lovely. If it were shiny and more purply it would remind me of those Quality streets but ya got that one wrong HardyEustace!

    Wow that's gorgeous.

The neckline is a bit high.

The shape and colour are gorgeous but I don't like the details on the dress, particularly the gold under the bust. It almost cheapens the dress - just my opinion sorry!

I know a picture paints a thousand words and all that but just posting (and re-posting) a picture of some sweets dosen't tell anyone if you actually like the dress or not. The OP is looking for opinions.

    Erm, ok.

In words - I don't like it, it'll make you look like a big quality sweet.

On a more serious note, I think that Monsoon is full of outrageously over-priced tat. I think they charge far too much for their clothes. That dress is probably gonig to be about €200 in irish shops and I honestly don't think it's worth it at all.

Also I think that the bust on the dress is vastly unflattering and will make your boobs look like two fried eggs (remember that awful dress Gwyeth Palthrow wore, Armani I think, her hair was in cornrows, it was a nude/beige, vile, vile, vile).

I think that the finish on the dress is terrible as well. And that emboidery bit just under the bust is awful and doesn't fit it with the whole polka dot material at all.

I love vibrant colour as well, but I think you could find far nicer dresses and probably far cheaper as well.

L, if you're looking for suggestions then why not post a few details - age, body shape, looks you aspire to - and ask people to suggest dresses?

I believe it would cost the OP about 140euro ish including delivery?

It's also 100% silk which would bring the price up as opposed to some cheaper fabric.

Personally i like, especially if the OP has a hint of a tan as opposed to pale, but each to their own.

Thanks guys for all the replies - tbh i'm in two minds about it now - not because of what ye said but usually when i see a dress on the monsoon website that looks ok (which isn't very often) - then when i see it in the shop it's AWFUL! I agree for most things they are extremely over priced (i rarely buy anything in there at all) i just happened to spot this and thought at first glance it looked ok - looking at it more closely though it may not be as nice in the shop and i agree with one poster who said that neckline is a bit high - on closer inspection i notice that too - i mean obviously i don't want it too low but not too high either!

I'm size 10/12 in a dress, 5 foot 6, brunette. Would love a flowy maxi dress but can't see any stunning ones anywhere. Perhaps it's too early? The wedding is the June weekend so time enough yet i suppose but don't want it to be a last minute thing. I really want to look well at this wedding!

Saw GORGEOUS dresses on newyorkdress.com but i'm nervous about buying any of them in case they just don't suit me (they don't take returns and are based in, you guessed it, New York!)

I haven't been to many weddings (just 2 in my 24 years!) and the second one i was at about 18 months ago - wore a dress from coast but if at all possible i would like to get something classy but different and i don't think i'm gonna find it there (the selection in coast is really bad this year!). Any suggestions?

I'm in Cork as you can see from my location;)

    Thanks:)

This is an example of the type of thing i like but i like lots of different types of dresses! I would prefer really if it were strapless - the dress that i end up getting i mean (don't like spaghetti straps) It's flowy and it would cover my legs (which aren't my best feature) but then it's silk so it would be really shiny wouldn't it? I'd love this in a chiffon material!

I'm on the look out for a maxi dress for a wedding in June too (it Italy) so I will post anything I find!

I am completely in love with this dress but it's waay too expensive. However it's only £249 on very.co.uk so if you knew anyone in the UK that you could have it delivered too it might be an option.

I'm giving up buying expensive dresses any more, they get worn once and then sit in my wardrobe forever!

Oh my god whoopsa that is exactly the kinda dress i mean! It's gorgeous! Is is silk though - cos i kind have this fixation that silk would cling to me whereas chiffon would be nice and flowy and wispy.....LOL! I'd just love something like that - it would be kind of cool (presuming that the weathr is scorching of course!) but would be glam as well!

Can you not have this dress delivered to Ireland?;)

That's beautiful. I've never looked at that site before.

If it's real silk then no it won't be shiny and will look and feel so nice to wear.

    What about something like this?

I like it as it's a maxi dress but not your standard i-looked-at-heat-and-now-i'm-copying-the-celebs-look. Great colour.

If it was a little dress then maybe silk wouldn't be as forgiving, but in this style of dress it would be just fab.

Yes Littlewoods Ireland deliver to Ireland only but Very.co.uk are the same company but won't deliver to here and I couldn't justify paying €359 for a dress that works out at about €280 on their English site!

You're dead right - i wish i knew someone in England but i don't - although hang on a minute....i might know someone who would do it for me but then you'd have to be sure it's a right fit and stuff. I just wish these dresses were on sale in the shops here!

    For every problem...:)
There are a number of mail-forwarding companies in the UK that will accept delivery of the parces and re-ship it to Ireland for a nominal fee. I can't recomend any as I'm lucky enough not to need them but a websearch for Mail forwarding services UK should provide some links.

As for not knowing the fit of something being bought online I tend to buy something very cheap from the manufactr first to see what the fit is like. When I'm know that I need to move a size up or down from their norm I'm more confident spending larger sums. With an online tailor I use it took 3 suits before I was happy but now I know that if I commision a suit it will be right for me.

Ultimatly nothing beats going for a proper fitting though. I'm currently looking for excuses to go to London so I can hit the Row for something nice.

Thanks for that Old Goat:) Was just reading the reviews though on that dress that whoopsa posted and they are very good - the only thing that's a problem is the length of the dress - it's too long for a lot of people (and one of the posters was 5ft8! and the other was wearing high shoes with it but it was still too long!) so would be worried about that. Not that i've decied i'm buying it or anything - still have a lot of looking to do!:)

I think the trick with maxi dresses is to try and avoid the wag look.

    This is a gorgeous shape

I'd probably re-dye it a more vibrant colour though
    image1s.jpg

    I ADORE this

Thanks Hardy Eustace - not really the style i'd go for though - they are a bit dull! But thanks:) I get what you mean about the wag thing though but please be assured that i am not trying to look like Victoria Beckham or Collen Rooney - i just like brightly coloured maxi dresses!;)

It has both a really unflattering neckline and length, unless you're really tall and willowy. Looks kind of old fashioned, IMO. Definitely nicer dresses out there to spend your money on.

Hi all! I'm back again with some more dresses i have come across - i am now SERIOUSLY considering purchasing from the newyorkdress.com website as they dresses there are breathtaking and this is where i found all the following!

Let me know what you think - i like all of them so it's extremely difficult to choose! I think i might buy two but which two is the question!! I know i can't return them but i figure i could just sell them if they are not suitable...!

I really like the first one you posted, you are a similar shape and size to me and I personally would avoid the 2nd and 3rd like the plague as I think unless you are 5ft 10 and a size 8 they would just drown you! I like the two Scala ones, but I think they are a bit bridesmaid-y. I am a BM in October and this is the kind of thing I am looking at. You don't want to look like you're trying too hard or trying to outshine the bridesmaids!

    I think No. 1 ftw!

P.S. Totally agree with you on Monsoon, dresses look amazing on the website and then look like cheap tat in reality. I have see the original dress you posted in the shop and it is nothing special. Way overpriced for what it is. But it does look gorgeous on the website!
