Identity Stolen

So, I have just discovered that some c u nt has been stealing my mail form my mail box for the last moth or so.

I'm very concerned about identify theft. I contacted an post who are investigating. I also asked the Irish credit Bureau to send me a credit report to see if any body was taking out loans or what not in my name.

I have just received the report and it said they had no information on me.... which I thought strange as I have a number of credit cards and a mortgage. I have never gone into the red with any of these accounts and when I rang them they said that that was the reason there was no information available....

I live in an apartment complex and we have all our mail boxes in the foyer. I know it is easy to just stick your hand in and take the mail without a key as I have done it before on many occasion (for my own mail obviously). I do not trust my neighbors in the slightest either.

I have requested that an post redirect my mail to my parents from now on.

Two cheques totaling 4000euro have being taken but not cashed.. they have now been cancelled.

I had a quick glance in the other letterboxes and could see that they have been receiving mail yet mine has been barren for 6 weeks.

Do you know of any other steps that i should take? any other way to see if someone is using my identify?? somewhere to buy a gun to shoot all my neighbors??

Have you contacted the Guards and the Building Managment company?

Both were of no help what so ever.

I'm not in the slightest bit surprised. Do you own or rent your appartment? If you only rent then I'm afraid you won't have any leverage with the management company.

As for the Garda. Theres not really anything you can do to make them more interested than they are.

Thats an awful thing to happen to you and I understand your concern. I think you've done things the right way and I hope that should be enough to cover yourself.

Did the Garda let you file an official report that will be on record if this arises again?
Also, did you send the management company a e-mail which can be kept as proof of you reporting this if the situation arises again or develops furtehr?

I own the apartment. The management company are useless, It was mail I was expecting from them that did not arrive so they told me it was probably being stolen. They gave no advice on what to do and basically hung up the phone.

I suspect you are a law abiding citizen so don't retain the services of a solicitor. However, if your management company, who you pay large sums of money to MANAGE your building, have shown and unwillingness to deal with the situation I advise you to take some legal advice on the situation.

The very least they should be offering to do is place a security camera(s) where the mailboxes are

A camera is the obvious solution, if they aren't willing to help then stick in a cheap one yourself.

If he puts in a camera without permission (not that he should have to do it) then hes the one liable to end up getting prosecuted

Inform anyone you get bills from immediately. Things like credit cards/banking can be done online now. MBNA have a great online service, BOI's is fairly good too.

I'd imagine phone companies would be happy to stop sending you paper bills also.

Is there anything you can do to make your postbox tamper proof? At the very least Id be coating inside where youd touch it as you reach in, with rub off ink or something that will stain the hands. Might deter the culprit if nothing else.

You say youve had your mail redirected, but I dont know if thats foolproof, Id want to know if mail IS being delivered cos if it is but gets nicked, you wont realise.

    Hi OP,
this might sound like an odd solution but if you take some pictures of your post box and post them in some engineering and woodwork forums on boards. Explain the situation and that you would like some suggestions on how to modify your post box so that it can not be stolen from. Some clever & practical thinkers/designers could help you engineer a solution. If there is a case where you can stick your hand in without opening it by key then to simply block this opening could prevent this from occurring again. i definitely think this is worth a try.
if you decide to do this pm me with photos i'll try to help
